Each afternoon session will last 1-2 hours, depending on the site (details on sites and times in the survey). We work with students from the ages of 6-18, across various sites. This summer is our busiest time of the year, with the largest number of youth participants across our sites (about 15-20 students per program).

Writing Mentors are expected to attend weekly sessions, with limited absences. They will also be asked to develop a lesson plan for delivery and to provide feedback on ongoing lesson plans.
We will be working with the Girls inc. program at YWCA, the North Side Learning Center, and La Casita Cultural Center. We are not actively recruiting for our La Casita program, due to previous volunteer commitments, but if you would like to connect with that site, please leave a comment at the end and we will reach out. We will collect these responses and the leaders of our various community programs will reach out at the end of June to solidify teams, schedule curricular calendars and plan a pre-program training.

Write Out Syracuse: Write Out is a community writing collective that partners university students, local writers, and professional authors with youth-focused afterschool programs to provide a joyful literary experience. The North Side Learning Center (NSLC): is a family literacy and community resource center rooted in the Northside neighborhood of Syracuse. For a decade, the center has been tailoring youth and adult language and literacy instruction to the needs of the Northside’s large refugee and immigrant population.
La Casita Cultural Center was established in 2011 to advance an educational and cultural agenda of civic engagement through research, cultural heritage preservation, media, and the arts, bridging the Hispanic communities of Syracuse University and Central New York. The Center is located in the historic Lincoln Building in the city’s Near Westside neighborhood. Facilities include an art gallery, library, performance and workshop spaces.
Girls Inc at YWCA’s.: Girls Inc. develops research-based informal education programs that encourage girls to take risks and master physical, intellectual and emotional challenges. Major programs address math and science education, pregnancy and drug abuse prevention, media literacy, economic literacy, adolescent health, violence prevention, and sports participation.
