2024 Detroit Farmer Scholarship for the MSU Organic Farmer Training Program
These scholarships will support beginning and aspiring farmers from Detroit/Highland Park/Hamtramck to pay fees for the MSU Organic Farmer Training Program.  

SCHOLARSHIP VALUE
Scholarships will be awarded based on financial need and merit for farmers from Detroit/Highland Park/Hamtramck. Scholarships of up to $3,150 will bring to program cost down to $750. Additionally, we encourage people to apply for a separate $500 scholarship, the Greenstone CultivateGrowth Grant at https://www.greenstonefcs.com/resources/cultivategrowth/cultivategrowth-grant 

ELIGIBILITY
Applicants must:
-       Be a beginning or aspiring farmer in Detroit, Highland Park or Hamtramck
- Apply for OFTP by November 15
-       Apply for scholarship by November 15 
-       Complete the scholarship application
-       Fill out the Financial Need Form and send relevant financial information, including a 2022 or 2023 tax return (and/or the tax return of anyone claiming them as a dependent). NOTE: For your security, we recommend that you black out or blur your Social Security number before emailing. 

SELECTION CRITERIA
1. FINANCIAL NEED: Low annual income for your household size
2.     MERIT: Hands-on farm experience and/or role in farm & food system as an educator.
3. MERIT: Potential for farm success and/or impact on the farm & food system
       
CONDITIONS
- The scholarship will be a credit to program fees. There will be no cash exchanged.
-       I understand that my scholarship will be applied after my portion of program fees is paid in full.    
- The scholarship will be forfeited if you:
             >Don't graduate, due to attendance, assignments, breaking the social contract, etc.
             >Cancel enrollment in the program.
             >Don't pay the balance of your program fees

Note: All information provided will be held strictly confidential.  It will be viewed only by the members of the Organic Farmer Training Program Scholarship Committee and the MSU Office of Financial Aid; this information will only be reviewed in order assess the need for financial support required to attend the Organic Farmer Training Program.

Please include information on your financial need, such as annual/monthly student loan payments, elder care obligations, income loss due to participating in OFTP or losing a job, etc. with special focus of financial stresses not shared in the Financial Need Form. You are also encouraged to include a paragraph about your merit, such as farm experience, your learning/farm goals or your ability to contribute to the learning community. *
