Piano Lesson Information - Fall 2024
Thanks for your interest in our private lesson program! We place students in private piano lessons by audition during the first weekend of the fall semester. By filling out the form below I'll be able to contact you with logistical information about the audition process during the summer. I normally send an update in late July for our August auditions, and I also post relevant updates to this page, so feel free to check back here periodically. We do expect to have openings in most or all of our studios this Fall.

Very tentative audition date: either Saturday, August 31st OR Sunday, September 1st (the weekend after classes begin)

---------------

Two important things:
1) We do place students by proficiency level as far as scheduling permits. That is, we try to place more advanced students first. Within each skill level, we do give priority to music majors, so an advanced music major will be placed before an advanced non-major, but an advanced non-major will be placed before an intermediate-level major. If you're a beginner (either self-taught or with no or only a couple of years of previous piano experience) you should consider our class piano sequence targeted to beginning students, MUSI 2302 and 2304. You can find more information about these classes on the music department's course offerings page.

2) if your main interest is jazz or non-classical piano, we have a fantastic instructor who specializes in those areas. His name is Calvin Brown, and to discuss taking lessons with him you should contact him directly at calvinebrown@gmail.com. You need not fill out this form or take an audition unless you also wish to be considered for classical piano lessons.

If you have any questions not covered here or at the music department's lessons page (music.virginia.edu/lessons), please feel free to contact me at jmayhood@virginia.edu.

My name is... *
The best e-mail contact for me is... *
I've read the private lesson policy and fee information on the music department website. *
I am a music major, or an intending major who has completed some coursework in the music department. (Note: private lessons are open to all students regardless of major, but we do give priority to music majors.) If this is your first year at UVA, go ahead and answer yes if you intend to major and also intend to take at least one music course this academic year. *
If you're a major or intending major, are you intending to pursue the Performance Concentration? (The performance concentration within the music major is aimed at our most advanced players, most of whom intend to pursue graduate study in piano performance.)
Clear selection
If you're an intending (but undeclared) major, which music classes have you taken so far (or what other courses are you enrolled in this upcoming semester)?
Are you requesting 60-minute lessons or 30-minute lessons? *
Tell me a little about your background and experience with piano (how long have you studied, with whom, where, etc.). *
What are some of the pieces you most recently prepared? Did you get a chance to perform any of them in public? *
What pieces or genres of music do you find the most rewarding to play? *
What are your goals for your piano study at UVA? What styles do you hope to focus on? (Note: we have a separate program for jazz and non-classical piano - if you're interested in that please contact Calvin Brown at calvinbrown@gmail.com.) *
As of today, given that at your audition we'd like to hear two pieces that best represent your playing, what do you think you will perform for us? Your best guess is fine - this isn't a firm commitment! *
