Faith for the Exiles: Intergenerational Relationships 1
These sermon discussion questions are designed for individuals or small groups. If you’re using these for your small group, feel free to use any of the questions that appeal to you and leave the ones that maybe aren’t as conducive to conversation. Also feel free to use these questions for your entire small group meeting time, or just a portion of your time if your group has other plans. As with every sermon in our Faith for Exiles series, we’d love to hear your feedback, especially if you have any intentional or practical ideas as to how we at Sardis could grow in the area of cultural discernment.

June 12, 2022 - 1 Peter
1. Peter is a dynamic character in scripture who undergoes a lot of change along his transformational journey. If you’ve been a follower of Jesus for a longer period of time, how is your faith different today than it was say 15, 25, or 35 years ago? If you had the opportunity, what wisdom about following Jesus might you have to share if you were invited to do so in relationship with a younger person?
2. Thinking about intergenerational relationships, who were the most significant mentors in your life who showed you the way of Jesus? What was it they did that helped you understand Jesus’ ways, life, and teachings? What has it looked like for you to extend that same care and example towards others?
3. In 1 Peter 4:8, Peter commends exiles to love one another deeply, practice hospitality, to not grumble, and to practice stewardship of gifts. How do you think we can do a better job of loving one another deeply across generations at Sardis? How do you think hospitality fits into this equation and what might that look like?
4. Why do you think service to one another is so important to Peter’s argument? Coming out of COVID, we have the task of building up some ministry teams. We have a number of vacant volunteer roles and teams that need folks to help serve. We need folks to help serve on Missions, Financial Stewardship, Coffee, IT, Media, Children’s Ministry, First Responders, and more teams. How should we go about building these teams up ahead of the Fall?
5. What did you think about the idea of ending our small group season earlier in the year to make room for affinity groups where people of different generations can mix more easily around common interests? Do you have any other ideas to cultivate intergenerational life?
6. What stops you from approaching people of a different generation for a conversation? What barriers do you think exists? Why is it easy for us to stratify into groups where we are more comfortable?
