Welcome, dear applicants!
Are you a librarian who is passionate about community engagement around local history/culture? Would you like to bring game design and interactive storytelling tools to your patrons? Then this pilot is for you!

Below you can apply to be one of 25 public libraries nationwide in our pilot. The first 10 will be selected in August of 2022. Each library will empower their neighborhood to make outdoor games and interactive stories, such as text-with-a-sculpture, scavenger hunts, and more.

WHO ARE WE? This project is called "Engaging Beyond Our Walls" (or EBOW for short). It is an IMLS-supported project that was created by the DC Public Library (DCPL) and the Game Center at American University. Our two-year project offers libraries the tools, training, and templates to create neighborhood games with Hive Mechanic, a game and interactive story authoring tool that utilizes text messaging technology and support for makerspaces.

IF SELECTED, you’ll get:
* $300 for supplies, materials, prepaid text messaging, etc.
* Turn-key templates to tell your local stories, with live demos. Your patrons can publish 1-10 games and interactive stories. We host all technology for you.
* We will co-host a workshop for your patrons (via Zoom), led by our team of game designers. In just 30 minutes they will have a working game/story!
* Free training and support from national leaders in game design. Office hours by Zoom for any questions or to get feedback on maximizing playful engagement and any technical questions.
* Participate in our peer innovators network of 25 leading library innovators who are simultaneously building their own projects and hosting workshops

You will be the POINT PERSON for your library. You would be responsible for:

1) Attending weekly coordination MEETINGS for 2-3 weeks via Zoom in the fall of 2022. Each will be under an hour. After the first month, there will be OPTIONAL Zoom "office hours" to bounce ideas off our experts, and to brainstorm with the other 10 libraries as peers.
2) Co-hosting a public WORKSHOP on Hive Mechanic for your patrons, either by Zoom or in person. We will provide the expert instruction in game design, thanks to our partners at the Game Center of American University. Some libraries will offer only one workshop, while others may offer a series (see below for examples).
3) Selecting one person for TRAINING in our Hive Mechanic tool. This person can be a volunteer or patron, or yourself. They will receive a $150 honorarium. The training takes approximately one hour to complete. No technical skills are required!
