Yin and Yang of Self-Compassion

You might find it helpful to learn more about how yin and yang self-compassion differ. In these situations,  your coach will tell you what to do:

  1. Self-care sometimes means validating and gently leaning into painful emotions (yin), and sometimes it means saying a firm "no!" and turning away from danger (yang).
  2. Self-compassion sometimes shows our bodies warmth and tenderness (yin), and sometimes it means figuring out what we need and ensuring we get it (yang).
  3. Sometimes self-compassion means being willingly open to (yin), taking action, and making a change (yang).

This activity could be constructive for men who think self-compassion means being soft or weak. This exercise is meant to give you a balanced view of self-compassion, which includes solid and protective actions toward yourself and the more traditional, well-known actions of caring for and soothing yourself.
