Girls Talk Math Volunteer Interest Form
Thanks for taking the time to fill out an interest form to volunteer for Girls Talk Math at the University of Maryland (UMD). This a program that promotes high school girls interested in mathematics by providing introductory college-level math lessons and affirming representation of women in math. In 2021 there are two virtual activities: a 1 day Saturday spring event and a 2-week camp. Tentatively there will be an on-campus fall 2021/winter 2022 event. The 2-week day camp occurs during weekdays July 19-30, 2021 from 2pm-4pm over zoom with some Saturday lectures/events throughout the summer.

During the program, attendees will be learning about a specific area of interest (such as scientific computing, networks, knot theory, surface classification, RSA cryptography, elliptic cryptography, and epidemiology modeling (SIR)) by working on a packet in a group of five. These packets are designed to be fairly self-guided with an undergraduate/graduate student mentor assigned for each topic so that the girls can have some guidance if needed. While they work on their math packet, they will also research and publish a podcast about a famous female mathematician with research related to their program studies. We will need many volunteers to participate as mentors during the camp.

Prior to camp we will have curriculum development to create new packets. There will also be opportunities to review and revamp current packets as well as make special editions accessible for virtual learning.
