Primary Type of Speed Limit Change (note: we may alter what you deem to be the type of speed limit change you use if we don't think it's categorized correctly, according to what other cities have submitted) *

CATEGORY-BASED REDUCTIONS: Cities, states, or others that have adopted lower default speed limits by category of street across 2 or more classes of streets. Often, this is a reduction of the default speed limit to one number on arterial streets and a reduction of the default speed limit to an even lower number on all other streets or on local or residential streets.

CITYWIDE DEFAULT REDUCTION: Cities, states, or others that have adopted lower default speed limits on all streets across a jurisdiction. These areas typically will have some streets with other speed limits, but the marker of this definition is that the default speed limit (the 'unless otherwise posted' speed limit), regardless of the class of street a driver is on, is the same.

NON-ARTERIAL DEFAULT REDUCTION ONLY: Cities, states, or others that have adopted lower default speed limits on one or more classification of non-arterial streets, including but not limited to 'local streets', 'residential streets', 'neighborhood streets', 'commercial core streets', etc, but that have not reduced the default speed limit on arterial streets.

ARTERIAL DEFAULT REDUCTION ONLY: Cities, states, or others that have adopted lower default speed limits on arterial streets, but not on other types of streets. This may mean that there are some arterials with higher speed limits, but the default speed limit has been reduced.

ZONE-BASED REDUCTIONS: Cities, states, or others that have adopted lower speed limits in specific, defined zones across the city. These might be downtown zones, neighborhood zones, or others. Note that many places have school zones or other zone-based speed limits on top of other reductions, so this category refers only to jurisdictions where zone-based reductions is the primary tool for reducing speed limits.

THINKING ABOUT IT: Cities, states, or others that have adopted a new context-sensitive approach for setting speed limits or have tested out reduced speed limits in very limited areas, but have not made a broader citywide commitment to speed limit reductions.
