You are being asked to participate in a voluntary research study. The purpose of this study is to investigate foreign language instructors' knowledge and practices regarding gender neutral language in the classroom. Participating in this study will involve filling out the following survey and your participation will last approximately 5 minutes. To our knowledge, there are no risks or discomforts related to this research. Although your participation in this research may not benefit you personally, it will help us gain a better understanding of instructors’ knowledge and practices regarding the use of gender neutral language in the foreign language classroom.

What procedures are involved?
The study procedures are as follows: an email containing the link to the survey, hosted on Google Form, will be sent out to language departments. Participants willing to answer the survey will click on the link provided which will direct them towards an anonymous google form. They will click submit at the end of the survey. Nothing else is required of the participants. If the participants wish to contact the researchers, they are able to email the researchers, if they want, at the provided email address.

This research will be performed at Big Ten universities and other large public and/or private universities across the USA. You will need to participate 1 time. The survey will take approximately 5 minutes to complete.

Will my study-related information be kept confidential?
Faculty, staff, students, and others with permission or authority to see your study information will maintain its confidentiality to the extent permitted and required by laws and university policies. The names or personal identifiers of participants will not be published or presented.

Will I be reimbursed for any expenses or paid for my participation in this research?
You will not be offered payment for being in this study.

Can I withdraw or be removed from the study?
If you decide to participate, you are free to withdraw your consent and discontinue participation at any time. Your participation in this research is voluntary. Your decision whether or not to participate, or to withdraw after beginning participation, will not affect your current or future dealings with the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.


Will data collected from me be used for any other research?
Your de-identified information could be used for future research without additional informed consent.
