🇬🇧Iranian modernism progressed in multiple directions with its own specific timeline and logic. In certain moments, it came into contact with the art scene in Paris where an artist such as Jalil Ziapour, in the late 1940s, witnessed the revival of Cubism as a national treasure and imported it to Iran. While discussing the general outlines of this modernism, the talk will give more weight to the role French art played in the trajectories of artists from Jalil Ziapour to Manouchehr Yektai, including Charles-Hossein Zenderoudi.

Fereshteh Daftari is an art historian and an independent curator. She is a foremost specialist of Iranian modernism. She wrote many studies and books on this subject, among which her PhD dissertation at Columbia University on "The Influence of Persian Art on Gauguin, Matisse and Kandinsky" (1991) and her book, "Persia Reframed: Iranian Visions of Modern and Contemporary art", in 2019. In the past two years, she has been lecturing at Stanford, Yale, Courtauld Institute and Tate Modern. She has also curated numerous exhibitions of Middle Eastern and Iranian modern and contemporary art. "Without Boundary" took place at the Museum of Modern Art (2006). "Rebel, Jester, Mystic Poet: Contemporary Persians", a traveling exhibition, opened at the Ag Khan Museum in Toronto (2017).
