Apply to join us for a semester-long excursion through the American West. More details about the semester are available here:
https://westminsteru.edu/academics/westminster-field-studies/westminster-expedition/index.html Applications will be due by
midnight, March 6, and we will notify you of the result of your application by March 8. There is a $500 deposit that is due at the time of registration (there will be another set of liability forms/etc that includes an opportunity to pay the deposit. Once you complete those forms/etc, we'll register you for the courses). In total, costs for the trip include tuition plus a $7,500 course fee (this number includes the $500 deposit) that covers all food, lodging, travel, and programming costs of the trip. The forms you fill out before registration will also include a schedule of payment
The expedition will offer students an immersive field experience in the American West. Students will concurrently enroll in 4 different 4 credit classes ("Landscape and Meaning," "The Indigenous West" "History of Public Lands" and "Environmental Cooperation and Conflict”). ENVI 101 or a History WCore course are prerequisites for the trip. We plan to camp about four of every five days with the fifth in a motel/lodge and a larger “city” visit every two weeks or so (or as weather dictates). At each site we will meet with local residents and experts (Indigenous leaders, writers, scholars, activists, elected officials, and government land managers) and potentially perform applicable service (e.g., wilderness trail maintenance). We will be leaving from campus on the first day of classes (August 21) and will return to campus on November 22. We'll also return to Salt Lake City for a short break from Oct 13-20.
Students will work on a variety of assignments, including photo essays, journals, interviews, short-form essays, and longer research papers, many of which will be shared on social media and a website/blog as we travel and presented publicly when we return to campus. While our itinerary will be carefully planned, we’ll allow for the (safe and sane) serendipities of a good road trip.
