Tell Us About Your Event
Juneteenth is a celebration of the ending of slavery in the United States for many Black and Pan-African Communities. Two and ½ years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation, Texas slave owners failed to tell persons they had enslaved that they were free. On June 19, 1865, Union soldiers entered Galveston, Texas, to enforce the new order. Juneteenth was not only a celebration but a movement to apprise formerly enslaved persons their God Given freedom and humanity was at last recognized by law. Furthermore, the Celebration was a gathering for Black people to collectively build power while reimagining their liberation and reclaiming their joy. The Proclamation only recognized the end of slavery, but the abhorent practices of enslaving Black bodies continued for decades. Disproportionate rates of incarceration, intra-community violence, and the healthcare disparities we see today are mere demonstrations of the indelible imprint slavery has left on the Soul of our Nation.

The Black Cornerstones Project (BCP) is partnering with block clubs, local organizations, and dozens of residents to host a series of community led events and activities for our Juneteenth Celebration in the heart of the Calumet Heights Neighborhood and in solidarity with community partners throughout Chicago. Black people co-creating bold spaces for reimagination, resistance, resilience, and restitution where communities can connect is the BCP Mission which transforms our work on a daily basis. We believe centering Black voices directly impacted by racial and social inequities, creating spaces to drive meaningful connections amongst neighbors, igniting collective leadership and community based solutions, and mapping out equitable resources accessible to residents are the Cornerstones to building and strengthening Black and Pan-African Communities.
