The Oakland University Jazz Singers program is a fun, educational, pre-professional group that exposes you to jazz and contemporary repertoire, performs on and off-campus, and can be enrolled for 1 or 0 credits.
Admission into the ensemble means you are expected to participate in both Fall and Winter semesters. The two possible groups are the Golden Grizzly Jazz Singers and Blue Grizzly Jazz Singers.
The Golden Grizzlies meet on Tuesday and Thursday from 5:05-6:35pm. This ensemble rehearses more involved repertoire and requires familiarity with jazz.
The Blue Grizzly Jazz Singers meet from 7-10pm on Monday nights. This group sings lighter repertoire but instructs more jazz techniques.
If you list yourself as only available for one group, you greatly increase the possibility of not joining the jazz singers. Please keep that in mind.
A prerequisite for either group is comfortability with holding a pitch in thick harmony, having classical or jazz choir experience, ability to sing straight-tone and blend, “pop” pronunciation, with a warm, pop/jazz sound to your voice. You do not have to have a jazz background, know how to improvise, or be a solo singer to participate; you only have to have an open, creative mind and want to bring good, hard-working energy to rehearsals.
Everyone, regardless of past involvement, is required to audition. Auditions are merit based, and are open to every student, regardless of field of study.
Participating in jazz singers means that you are expected to be at all rehearsals, and prepare the music required on your own time.
Most importantly, we come together as a group, support and empower each other, and understand that learning and performing jazz is a team activity. We all must give a little of ourselves for the greater whole.
If you wish to do an in-person audition, you can do so on Friday, Sept 1 at 1pm at 101 Hill House. You will be asked to do the same things as in the video audition.
AUDITION INFO:
The due date for auditions is on the Friday of the first full week of the Fall semester
