The Orchard Project seeks to increase equity in our local food system by putting abundant food sources across metro Atlanta. We believe community orchards can be a powerful mechanism to start producing food in places we haven't yet reached. Community orchards increase access and ownership, not just for a moment, but for years on end.
Our Community Orchard Coalition includes Food Well Alliance, Concrete Jungle, Fruit Forward Orchards, Community Farmers Markets and the Atlanta Regional Commission with support from The Giving Grove. A panel of representatives from the Community Orchard Coalition will evaluate and rank applications based on the criteria below coupled with results of in-person site visits for finalists.
Criteria for a successful Orchard Project Application:
a. Site is in Cherokee, Clayton, Cobb, DeKalb, Douglas, Fayette, Forsyth, Fulton, Gwinnett, Henry or Rockdale counties in Georgia.
b. Site has ready access to water.
c. Applicant has an orchard stewardship team in place.
d. Preference to sites that are large enough to accommodate ten or more trees.
e. Site has public access such as a park, community garden, k-12 school, senior center, public housing, street planting, faith organization, youth activity center, supported living community, health or medical facility, university campus etc.
