COV-SPOT: The COVID-19 Safe Prescribing of Oncological Treatments initiative
The UK coronavirus cancer project (UKCCP) is a national programme set up to pioneer the use of a real-world datasets and registries to safeguard, monitor and protect cancer patients during the COVID-19 pandemic. The clinician-led project was set up in March 2020 and launched in just 100 hours, linking 69 cancer centres across the UK. It was the first to demonstrate that chemotherapy could be safely delivered during the pandemic in UK Cancer centres.
The COVID-19 Safe Prescribing of Oncological Treatment Initiative (COV-SPOT) is a nationally prioritised evaluation, which aims to provide evidence to guide clinical decisions for cancer patients who are receiving treatments (eg SACT/radiotherapy), and have recently tested positive for COVID-19. There is currently no evidence to support decision making in this setting, including whether to delay giving SACT or a dose reduction during active COVID-19 infections. This lack of evidence could lead to variations in care and inequalities between different regions of the UK.
This project will focus on several aspects of treatment delivery, including safe timing to restart treatments, a risk-benefit treatment pathway in COVID-19-positive cases and the risk of COVID-19 re-activation if therapy is delivered.
