The Svoboda Diaries Project is a collection of diaries written by Joseph Mathia Svoboda, a purser on a British steamship. These firsthand accounts give us a taste of trade, politics and landscape of 19th century Ottoman Iraq from the perspective of someone with a rich family history and local connections. We are continuing to digitize them in a easy-to-read format, so that they are more accessible for anyone who is interested or needs a source for research.
