While we're sad to have to cancel our on-campus youth theology program this year, we're seizing the opportunity to offer "Faith & Justice in the Time of COVID-19."
Be the Light Youth Theology Institute (BTLI) has always worked to educate students for justice during our weeklong summer program, and while not in our usual format, this year is no different. As Dr. Marcia Chatelain, scholar on race and ethnicity in America at Georgetown University, recently said, "I hope in 50 years that people will talk about this as the great awakening that American needed to protect all of its people. That this was a moment of transformation for some, if not all, in seeing the ways that people in America live in such disparate realities. That even though this virus can infect anyone and everyone, there's a difference in how it ravages their lives."
This special online session of Be the Light will focus on the question of the faith that does justice in a time of pandemic. We have each retreated into isolation, but the call for justice still echoes around the world. This summer, we hope to look at some of the disparities that Dr. Chatelain highlights, thinking about what social justice looks like during this time. Of course, we will also offer opportunities for faith sharing and community, coming together as we always have as a Be the Light family.
After a live online welcome session on July 12, we will be uploading academic, immersion-workshop, and spirituality-based content on Mondays and Wednesdays of the next 3 weeks. Reflection questions for each of these components will allow you to engage personally with this content and see its relevance in your own lives and your own situations. Weekly live (virtual) faith-sharing sessions with our student leaders will also be available. After it all, we’ll gather again together (virtually) for mass and a final sendoff on July 29th.
All those who have previously participated in Be the Light are welcome to join us in addition to any current high school students. If you have already applied through our website, please email us at
