Champion of Justice Award (Internal)

The American Board of Trial Advocates Champion of Justice Award is given annually to three ABOTA members, Chapters, or ABOTA State/Regional organizations for their outstanding work to advance ABOTA’s overall purposes of the preservation and promotion of the civil jury trial right through:

Improvement of ethical & technical standards in the practice of law;
Education of students and the general public;
Activities to advance and ensure fair and diverse juries;
Preservation of the quality and independence of the judiciary; and,
Other work that supports ABOTA’s mission statement.

Nominees may not know that an application has been submitted on their behalf. Please submit supplemental documents (examples include: videos, whitepapers, etc.) that display the nominee’s commitment to ABOTA and the Seventh Amendment along with the application.

Criteria
Nominees must demonstrate through word and action an ongoing, strong and exceptional commitment to access to justice through trial by jury before a fair and diverse jury pool before a qualified and independent judge, with a concurrent showing of positive impact. This includes but is not limited to, actions, written or spoken statements and/or positions, presentations or submissions to publications, groups or platforms (e.g. social media platforms) which advance the mission of ABOTA and fulfill the stated purpose of this award.
Such activities may include but are not limited to:
1. Creation, promotion and/or participation in programs, presentations and/or other activities that advance the ethical and technical standards of the practice of law and access to justice.
2. Educational programs, presentations and/or writings on the history of, need for and value of civil jury trials before a diverse jury presented to students, the legal community, the general public, journalists, educators, judges, and the like.
3. Participation in community outreach that targets future potential jurors with the purpose of dispelling negative perceptions and stereotypes about jury service.
4. Defending in print and other forms of media the right to trial by jury.
5. Behavior demonstrating a commitment to and defense of the rights afforded by the Seventh Amendment.
6. Actions which have enhanced the quality and independence of the judiciary, such as defending judges from unfair criticism and supporting funding of the courts.
In addition to the above, demonstration of the following: collaborative projects, program participation and promotion, teaching experience, pro bono work, membership promotion, diversity promotion, judicial involvement/defense, Chapter contributions, regional contributions, National contributions, consistency of contributions, and ABOTA Foundation giving.
