Two scholarships have tried to think the diversity of economic systems beyond a transatlantic perspective in putting at the center of the research agenda the comparison between Europe and Asia: social systems of innovation and diversity of capitalism. However, for various reasons related to the setting of their research agenda and their respective position to the mainstream research agenda, these two scholarships have rarely communicated, with few exceptions (Boyer et al., 2012; Storz et al., 2013; Lee & Shin, 2019).  The purpose of this conference is to (re)create the conditions of a dialogue, which should be highly beneficial in particular to innovation studies.
The starting point of the research on Asian capitalisms is to try to understand why Asian capitalisms, while being diverse, have systematically done better than the US and European capitalisms in terms of economic performance and, in some countries at least, of health interventions, but without following the path of liberal capitalism. It requires jointly investigating several dimensions, including the forms of internationalization (e.g. the building of adequate position in the global value chains), the forms of State interventions (e.g. role of developmental state), or the social protection.
What has been under-researched is the evolution of Asian systems of innovation, in relation with the diversity of Asian capitalisms. The key issue is indeed to understand why and how they have not converged towards the so-called Silicon Valley model (emphasizing the role of entrepreneurs, the collaboration between academia and industries and liberalized financial and labor markets as the condition for innovation), while delivering highly innovative outputs in several industries.
This conference will discuss issues on the politics of innovation and their transformation with the specificity of reflecting these in relations with the diversity of contemporary political economies and their relations to globalization.

This event is organised in the framework of the first annual meeting of the Euro-Asian research team – Capitalisms, technologies, societies and Health, to be held from July 7th to July 13th 2022, followed by two others in 2023 and 2024. The general goal of the project is to revisit the relations between technologies and societies by focusing on health issues. This annual meeting, bringing together the project’s research team on the Condorcet Campus, should help to communicate the team’s work to a wider public, strengthen collaborations within the research project, report on the first results and set the next steps.
