Confidential Sexual Violence Advocate (CSVA) Volunteer Interest Form
A CSVA is often one of the first points of contact a survivor has when they reach out for help. CSVAs provide emotional support, empathic listening, and resources when requested by survivors. They may also be the first point of contact if a survivor chooses to report an assault to law enforcement. In some cases, it is the first time a survivor is disclosing their experience to anyone. A CSVA assists survivors and their loved ones by providing crisis intervention, emotional support, essential information, and referrals. For this reason, advocates are of critical importance to supporting survivor's needs.

CSVA Responsibilities:
  • Complete required 40+ hour training
  • Maintain confidentiality through all interactions with survivors and loved ones
  • Respond with an understanding of trauma to survivors, loved ones, and community members
  • Assist survivors in making informed decisions and supporting them as they navigate medical and legal systems
  • Serve as a survivor-focused member of Sexual Assault Response Team (S.A.R.T.) at hospitals, police stations, prosecutor's offices, courts, etc.
  • Attend regular ongoing education and volunteer meetings
  • Offer immediate support to callers of 24-hour hotline, delivering compassion, empathy, validation, and information
*All services are free of charge and provided in a manner that preserves the victim's privacy and safeguards the victim's right to confidentiality pursuant to NJ Statutes (N.J.S.A. 2A:84A-22.15).
