Georgia’s Compulsory School Attendance Law (O.C.G.A. 20-2-690.1 and O.C.G.A 15-11-2(11)(A)(i)) requires that all children between ages 6 and 16 be enrolled in and attend school. Please be advised that under this law, any parent, guardian, or other person residing in this state who has control or charge of a child or children and who shall violate the law shall be guilty of a misdemeanor and, upon conviction thereof, shall be subject to a fine of not less than $25.00 and not greater than $100.00, imprisonment not to exceed 30 days, community service, or any combination of such penalties, at the discretion of the court having jurisdiction. Each day’s absence after receipt of this notice will constitute a separate offense. All children enrolled for 20 school days or more in a public school prior to their seventh birthday are subject to the compulsory school attendance law. (O.C.G.A 20-2-150(c)).              The Glynn County Board of Education attendance policy requires us to notify parents in writing when their child has five (5) unexcused absences from school. Parents must attend an Attendance Review Panel Meetings when their child reaches five and ten unexcused absences from school. Failure to participate in either of these meetings may result in an arrest for educational neglect. Parents of eligible students in grades 3-8 appearing in State Court may be given the opportunity to participate in the 90 day Truancy Intervention Program (TIP) in lieu of more punitive consequences. The TIP will be administered and monitored by the Juvenile Court System of Glynn County.            Parents must send a written note or email to the school’s attendance clerk to have an absence coded as excused. This documentation must be submitted within three (3) days of the student’s return to school. According to Glynn County School Board Policy JB, an absence may be marked excused for the following reasons:    1.Personal illness or attendance in school that endangers the health of the student or others.2.A serious illness or death in a student’s immediate family necessitating absence from school.3.A court order or an order by a governmental agency, including pre-induction physical examinations for service in the armed forces, mandating absence from school.4.The observance of religious holidays, necessitating absence from school5.Conditions rendering absence impossible or hazardous to student health or safety.6.A period not to exceed one day for registering to vote or voting in a public election.7.A student whose parent or legal guardian is in military service in the U. S. Armed Forces or National Guard, and such parent has been called to duty for, or is on leave from, overseas deployment to a combat zone or combat supporting posting, will be granted up to 5 days of excused absence per school year to visit with his or her parent prior to the parent’s deployment or during the parent’s leave.8.Any emergency situation or set of circumstances which, in the judgment of a building administrator, constitutes just and sufficient cause for an excused absence from school.     As stated in the Glynn County School Board Policy JB, any student who has more than seven (7) unexcused absences during the year will be ineligible for participation in any extracurricular activities (O.C.G.A. 40-5-22 a.1). Examples include, but are not limited to, athletic contests, fine arts productions and competitions, dances, prom, senior activities such as Grad Night, vocational competitions, literary competitions and band competitions.     Parents may write a personal note to excuse up to seven absences due to their child not being well enough to attend school. Medical documentation will be required to excuse an absence after seven absences due to an illness have been accumulated. If your student has been diagnosed with a chronic medical condition, he or she may be eligible for services when absent from school. Please notify the assistant principal of any diagnosis your student has that may prevent regular school attendance. Any information provided will be treated confidentially in accordance with the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).        Parents can access their student’s attendance by going to the school system website (www.glynn.k12.ga.us) and logging onto the Infinite Campus Parent Portal. Parents may also choose to download a smartphone app that will automatically send an alert notification as soon as a student is marked absence in each and/or class period. *
