Reason project requires using the SHRIMP-RG *
Please briefly explain why the proposed project is best undertaken with the SHRIMP-RG, and not another approach.
Is the proposed research a substantial or critical portion of a student's or post doc's research project? *
Please include student's name(s) and degree(s)
Number of individual samples * *
Composition of samples *
Please specify the composition of samples (e.g., zircon, sphene, etc), and number of each.
Types of samples *
Anticipated mounts to be prepared (e.g., epoxy, thin-sections, indium) and the number of each
Proposed Analyses *
List all proposed analyses to be performed (e.g., U-Pb, U-Th, trace elements in apatite, etc.)
Have the mount(s) already been prepared? *
Where will the sample mount(s) be prepared? *
Stanford, home institution, or other?
If the proposed work involves method development for a new approach, please describe *
We are always interested in considering new innovative approaches and method development on the SHRIMP-RG.
Is the project funded, or do you anticipate funding? *
Is the work part of a future proposal? *
Please describe the nature of the funding *
What are the funding source(s)? (please include agency or institution, grant number, duration of funding, etc.)
External users: Please specify the grant number(s).
e.g. PI(s), NSF grant number, other sources, etc.
USGS & Stanford Users: Please specify the USGS supporting program(s) or Stanford PTA# and PI(s):
If project is unfunded, please explain in detail:
(1) The justification to carry out initial work as seed support to obtain regular funding. (2) Alternatively, if the proposed work is developmental, provide the motivation and justification. Note that our ability to support unfunded work is very limited and priority is given to projects with the highest scientific merit.
Conditions of use
(1) The Stanford-USGS Micro Analysis Center exists to allow scientists to collect their own data. We encourage the participation of users (especially student's) in all aspects of data collection, including sample preparation, sample analyses, and data reduction and interpretation. Our goal is to train users to collect and analyze data independently on an as needed basis. We are willing to work with users in the development and refinement of cutting-edge new techniques that have the potential to be widely used.
(2) We expect that all users will endeavor to publish all interpretable SHRIMP-RG data acquired in the Stanford-USGS Micro Analysis Center in peer-reviewed publications in a timely manner. Past publication record is taken into account when we prioritize the scheduling of future instrument time. If there are reasons that preclude publication of results, these must be disclosed when instrument time is requested.
(3) Because almost every data-set is unique, we require all manuscripts containing data collected from this facility to be reviewed by SUMAC staff prior to submission to ensure that the data produced using SHRIMP-RG have been reliably reduced and that experimental methods are clearly and accurately reported . Laboratory staff can provide text describing the analytical methodology used on the SHRIMP-RG during your session, how the samples were prepared, or how the data were reduced and calculated (e.g., standards, decay constants, software, etc).
(4) While not explicitly required, it is appropriate to include laboratory personnel as co-authors for manuscripts in situations where they have made significant scientific contributions to the acquisition and interpretation of ion probe data. Collaborative research, where facility scientists contribute to project design, analysis, interpretation and co-author publications, typically results in a more meaningful user experience.
(5) The Stanford-USGS Micro Analysis Center must be explicitly mentioned in the acknowledgements section using the following sentence: "The Stanford-USGS Micro Analysis Center provided instrument time, technical support, and scientific guidance for acquiring ion micro probe data presented in this paper." For geochronology results standardized using TEMORA-2 reference material, users must acknowledge Geosciences Australia for providing the material free of charge.
