Essex Suffolk Norfolk Pylons action group history & heritage survey
We need your help! We would like you to identify heritage assets* near you and to think carefully about their setting and the impact of pylons, undergrounding and substations.
National Grid's third consultation on the
Norwich to Tilbury pylons/undergrounding project is under way, until 18 June. This next one will be its Statutory Consultation. It is the consultation which informs the development consent order (planning application) which is submitted to the Planning Inspectorate for examination.
It is imperative that we understand the impact of the project on heritage assets along the route. We have therefore set up this questionnaire. It is constructed from the Historic England checklist.
You do not have to answer all the questions, but the more you answer, the more data we collect. We recognise that it may take some time to fill it in, but this is an important citizen's project to inform our submission to National Grid and the Planning Inspectorate, in a standard format. We believe that the Norwich to Tilbury project brings significantly more harm than benefit, and your answers will enable us to demonstrate that.
Did you know that our three counties, Essex, Suffolk and Norfolk, are in the top ten for numbers of heritage assets? Please help us to protect the incredible heritage and landscapes of East Anglia. Pour yourself your favourite tipple, tea or stronger, and start now...!
Any questions to pylons@mail.com.
Thank you in advance, Rosie and team.
WHAT IS A HERITAGE ASSET?
* A building, monument, site, place, area or landscape identified as having a degree of significance meriting consideration in planning decisions, because of its heritage interest. “Heritage is a broad concept and includes the natural as well as the cultural environment. It encompasses landscapes, historic places, sites and built environments, as well as bio-diversity, collections, past and continuing cultural practices, knowledge and living experiences. It records and expresses the long processes of historic development, forming the essence of diverse national, regional, indigenous and local identities and is an integral part of modern life. It is a social dynamic reference point and positive instrument for growth and change. The particular heritage and collective memory of each locality or community is irreplaceable and an important foundation for development, both now and into the future.”
