Petition for the reinstatement of Social Sciences in Greek Highschools
The Greek Ministry of Education has decided to remove three of the four Social Science courses that have been taught in greek highschools until now.  This year the course of Sociology was taught for the last time in due to its abolishment after 39 years of presence.  Two other courses in Social Sciences were removed from the public education system since last year, the course "Modern World, Citizenship and Democracy" and the course "Basic Principles of Social Sciences".
Those actions constitue a complete expulsion of Social Sciences from highscools and as a result the disappearance of an entire branch of  Social Studies educators from schools, which consists of Sociologists, Social Anthropologists, Political Scientists and Attorneys at law.
The direct result of the above political decision was:  •The loss of thousands of jobs of social studies educators, who work in public schools or in the private sector.  • Students who will be admitted from the next academic year to Universities and Schools of Pedagogy, Law, Social studies, Economics and other Sciences will not have been taught a single course in social sciences.   Most importantly, the consequences from  the removal of social sciences from highscool will be experienced by the Greek society in the near future.  Through the course ‘’Citizenship Education’’ the students understand the importance of democratic values, their obligations but also their rights. They undestand how a state works and how the istitution of the european union functions.
Sociology, as we know, contributes to the development of critical thinking, to the understanding of the social phenomena, tackling social problems but also helps the students to cultivate relationships with those around them and be members of a community.
The study of issues like discrimination, stereotypes, crime, inequalities, social injustice, will no longer be part of the education system of Greece.
Therefore, we ask the Greek Ministry of Education to reinstate the courses of Social Sciences in our public shools.
