Have you been diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease, or do you know a loved one who has?
Are you interested in providing data to help train Artificial Intelligence (AI) to diagnose Parkinson's, or helping to design an online Parkinson's screening tool that is secure and easy to use?
Are you part of the Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander community, and do you have feedback on how healthcare systems can be designed to better respect your data privacy?
Compensation is available to participate in the study.
Studies: (1) "Parkinson's Disease Detection using Keyboard Strokes" and (2) "Co-design of gamified Parkinson's Disease screening website sensitive to indigenous data sovereignty"
If you participate in project 1, you will be emailed a link to a web app that you can use to complete a gamified test designed to screen for Parkinson's Disease. The test requires an access to a computer with a keyboard and mouse or trackpad, a browser, and an internet connection. To collect data, the website will direct you to type on a keyboard and make directed tracing movements with your mouse. You will be asked to complete the tasks with both hands. Data collected from this trial will be stored securely with medical-grade data safety measures.
If you participate in project 2, you will be asked to participate in a brainstorming session to design a website for Parkinson’s Disease (PD) screening.
We will first ask you to individually share your thoughts on and desired features for a web-based PD screening tool, especially those pertaining to data privacy and sharing health data in order to improve digital tools. We will then ask you to join a group where you and other participants will each share your solution and discuss it with the broader group, then split you and the other participants into four teams who will each refine and combine their ideas and then present them to the broader group. Additionally, we will ask you to complete a short exit survey to give us a better idea about your opinions on digital health screening tools, artificial intelligence, and data privacy.
Participant Recruitment
We are seeking 200 participants for this study, half who have been diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease and half who have not. All participants who complete the steps of the web-based screening tool will receive $15 of compensation in the form of cash or prepaid visa gift card.
We are seeking 20 study participants to engage in the 3-hour co-design and interview session (project 2). We hope to recruit at least 10 Native Pacific Islander participants to represent their community, and we welcome up to 10 participants from other ethnic backgrounds. We are aiming for roughly 5 participants with PD and 5 participants without PD within each group. All participants in the co-design session will receive $50 of compensation in the form of cash or prepaid visa gift card.
The Study is conducted by the Hawai'i Digital Health Lab (hawaiidigitalhealthlab.com) at the University of Hawaii.
