"Democratising data analytics in the organisation context
By Dr. Youyung Hyun, Professor, GIS Faculty, Hosei University
Abstract: Traditionally, organisations had
clear boundaries across business and IT departments, leaving data analytics as
the exclusive preserve of technical employees. In such a setting, firms mostly utilise
internal data generated from an organization’s internal operations, such as
finance, sales, accounting, etc. and make operational decisions based on these.
However, with the advent of big data from multiple sources like social media,
Internet of Things, and mobile devices, external data flows into organisations and
this involves deeper, novel insights about customers and market conditions.
Firms can no longer solely rely on IT departments to generate meaningful
insights from these external data because in many cases IT employees do not
have the business domain knowledge to effectively understand customer data and
create insights for more intelligent decisions. Therefore, many firms have
recently tried to extend the use of data analytics beyond the scope of IT
departments and encourage business employees to understand and use data
analytics. This is called data analytics democratisation
(DAD) in my research. Capturing this “democratising”
phenomena regarding data analytics, a lot of practitioners have documented
about how organisations are realising it,
for example, in terms of data analytics training, cross-departmental
collaboration, development of user-friendly tools, etc. However, the majority
of these do not adopt a theoretical lens to identify which elements are
necessary for building democratisation of
data analytics in organisations, and
thereby there is a lack of comprehensive understanding on this topic. To fill
this gap, my research aims to conceptualise core
principles for DAD based on theoretical underpinnings, and to describe how DAD
can influence more intelligent decision-making in an
comprehensive manner.
