OPTION DESCRIPTIONS
Babysitting
Students will learn a variety of skills that will help allow you to become an awesome babysitter. Real world simulation tasks will provide students with the opportunity to test babysitting strategies and skills out.
Band
Students will have the opportunity to learn how to play a concert band instrument of their choice and will prepare for various performances throughout the year.
*Please note that this is a full year class.
*This will replace the Fine Arts class mentioned in the instructions.
Cosmetology
Students will learn about hair styling (braiding, curling) and esthetics-including nail care & skin care and have the opportunity to practice their skills in a safe environment. Part of this course will include the possibility of connecting with cosmetology facilities at a high school or community level and learning about career related opportunities in this field. Join cosmetology for a hands on learning experience!
Design Studies
Students will be using a variety of techniques and equipment to create various personalized and creative wood designs. Students will be utilizing teacher supplied hammers, nails, string, wood burning pens, paint, crayons and canvas to create their own unique design pieces that will be graded and taken home to share and enjoy. I look forward to students bringing energy, ideas, and enthusiasm to share with me and other students.
Drama
In drama students will explore various forms of dramatic expression and theatre. Everything from motionless tableaux, to over-the-top expressions of body language, to intense monologues to the quick-on-your-feet art of improvisation is explored. Anyone from theatre regulars to students who are brand new to drama are welcome!
Environmental Stewardship
Students will explore various ways that we are called to care for God's creation - Earth. Learning opportunities include working within our aquaponics greenhouse as well as recycling and composting.
Film Study and Creation
Students will have the opportunity to watch various types of films. Students will get to write their own movie reviews, create a ‘green screen’ preview for a film of their choice, try their hand at script writing and learn about the various careers in this field.
French
Introduction to the French Language. This is a beginner level french option introducing students to the new language.
Indigenous Studies:
Together, we will experience and gain appreciation for various Canadian Indigenous cultures, traditions, and languages, through interaction with a wide variety of Indigenous people, including elders and youth. Current and historical events, as well as in-person and virtual interactions and activities, will shape the course experience. These activities may include learning to make a Tipi, smudging, learning Cree, and learning drumming.
Leadership
Students will plan and implement school wide activities and a theme week during each term. Students will also choose different skills and interests they are passionate about and find a way to make a difference using those skills through community volunteering opportunities. Have your voice and choice in what happens in your community!
Multimedia
Students will focus on digital citizenship and Google Apps. Primarily using Chromebooks, students will experience the programs they will use during middle school. Students will spend time creating on each of the main Google Apps -- slides, drawing, forms, etc. and will be exploring other apps on the Chrome Web Store.
Painting/Drawing
In this class students will explore a variety of different media to complete art projects. We will explore pointillism, negative space and examining specific artist’s techniques used to create pieces of art.
