'WORDS IN COLOUR' - HYP's creative writing competition for Black History Month 2023
In honour of Black History Season 2023, Hackney Youth Parliament has launched a creative writing competition for young people in Hackney. You don’t have to be a professional to take part - we are looking forward to entries from young people with creative and imaginative minds. The judging panel will be made up of the leaders, deputy leaders and Young Speakers of Hackney Youth Parliament and staff involved with Young Hackney.

Topic: 'WORDS IN COLOUR'. This competition is a celebration of African, Asian and Caribbean people and cultures.

THEME: This year the theme is 'Before Windrush' – an exploration of the lives and stories of Black Britons who were living in the UK before the arrival of the Empire Windrush in 1948.

You could submit:

  • A Poem

  • A Short Story

  • A speech or spoken word

  • A scripted scene

  • Song Lyrics

Any form of writing is accepted!


Everyone who takes part will be invited to the Black history month event 'Words In Colour', which will take place on Saturday 21 October. Winners will be given a platform to perform their creative writing pieces at this event, and will be announced prior to the event to receive a prize!

All creative writing pieces will be published on the Young Hackney website after the event. 

Winners:
Winners will receive a VIP invitation to our event which will be on Saturday 21 October 2023, a certificate of excellence in the competition, and a platform to perform their creative writing pieces.
The Top 3 will be announced prior to the event.
All Top 3 winners will be given an additional prize.

Rules:
Young people must be between the ages of 13 - 19 (up to 25 with SEND).
You must live, work or attend school or college in Hackney.
1 entry per person.
Young people must enter their name, age and email address so that we can reach out to them.
Creative writing pieces must be the young person’s own work and must not be plagiarised.
Creative writing pieces  must not exceed 500 words (excluding the title).

CREATIVE WRITING PIECES MUST BE SUBMITTED TO THIS FORM BY WEDNESDAY 11TH OCTOBER 2023.

Winners will be contacted on MONDAY 16 OCTOBER 2023.
