Principal
Investigator: Dr. Angel Ford, Assistant Professor of Information Sciences
and Technology.
Why are we doing this study?
You are
being asked to participate in a research study about the experiences of
scholars in sub-Saharan Africa when trying to engage in scholarly
communication.
The
purpose of the study is to explore the unique experiences, including challenges
and barriers scholars experience when trying to consume,
produce, and disseminate research outputs.
Why
am I eligible to participate in this study?
You are
eligible to participate because you are either a PhD student or a faculty
member at a sub-Saharan African institution of higher education.
What will I do if I choose to be in this study?
If you
volunteer to participate, you will fill out a 10 to 15 minute online survey. At the end of the survey, you will have an
option to volunteer for an interview where you would be able to expand on your
responses and answer additional questions.
If you
volunteer for the interview, you may be contacted to do an online Zoom
interview. During a Zoom interview, an audio-visual recording
will be created unless you request that the interview not be recorded.
Any participant
can skip any question in the survey or the interview and withdraw from the
study at any time.
Participants
remarks during the survey or interview may be quoted in presentations and
articles from this work. A pseudonym will be used to protect your identity.
How will you protect the information you
collect about me, and how will that information be shared?
Results
of this study may be used in publications and presentations. Your study
data will be handled as confidentially as possible. If results of this study are published or
presented, individual names and other personally identifiable information will
not be used.
Will
my data be used in future research?
Identifiers
will be removed from all data, the data could be used for future research
studies or distributed to another investigator for future research studies
without additional informed consent.
