What is Art Literacy?
Art Literacy is a volunteer-led program in Beaverton Schools where the works of different artists, plus the art of a culture, are introduced to each class throughout the year. This year we will have 4 projects. We will study the works of Jan Vermeer, Maxfield Parrish, Beatrix Potter and African Textiles.

But I don't know anything about art...
All you need is the belief that art is important for every student and a willingness to teach students about are/artist/culture, or to be an assistant in the classroom.

How do I know what to present in the classroom?
Volunteers attend a training meeting before the classroom lesson to hear about that month's lesson. It includes a scripted lesson, PowerPoint presentation of the artist and an art project. All materials and training provided for you!

What kind of time commitment are we talking about?
The classroom lesson is approximately one hour, plus time doe set-up and clean-up. The total volunteer time is about two hours.

Art Literacy is rewarding and fun, for students and volunteers alike.
