Advanced Band Disclosure
Daily practice is essential for students to become proficient at reading music and playing their instruments. Please set aside at least 20 minutes every evening for practice. . See why your student should participate in band. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1njTXx47vHs&safe=active

Students are expected to have an instrument by September 5, 2023. Daily participation points will be deducted for students who show up unprepared after that.

CONCERT PARTICIPATION
Concert performances are an integral part of the class curriculum. They are not extra-curricular events. They are quarterly finals. For this reason, attendance at all concerts is mandatory.  Only a phone call to me from a parent before the concert concerning a death, severe illness, or an extreme family emergency are reasons for not attending. I have included the dates for the entire year. Please mark these dates on your calendar and plan accordingly. If a student’s parent or guardian contacts me about an unavoidable absence prior to or immediately after the absence, the student will receive an opportunity to make-up points that were lost.   Concerts are worth 200 points and are added to the student’s grade after the performance.
Plan on Best Dress for concerts.  Contact info (School: 476-5320   e-mail: rgriffey@wsd.net
Please call me the day of the concert if an emergency occurs and let me know if you won’t be there!

DISTRICT BAND FESTIVAL
Every member of the band is expected to attend the WSD Invitational Band Festival. Advanced/Intermediate Band Festival will be held on March 21, 2024 at Roy HS Auditorium during the school day. Family and friends are welcome to attend. I will be sending more info home as it becomes available.

SOLO/ENSEMBLE
Every member of every band will be required to perform a solo/ensemble during third quarter in addition to the spring concert.  Please start planning for this early. Don’t wait until the last minute. It is a term project.  The Weber District Solo/Ensemble Festival hosted at Rocky Mountain Jr. is on TBD, from 5:45pm – 8:30 pm. This Festival is open to any band student who wants to audition with me.

SUBSTITUTE POLICY
A substitute will be necessary at times throughout the year. I expect students to behave in an appropriate manner by following school and classroom rules and policies. Anything less than exemplary behavior will result in the student receiving an unsatisfactory citizenship grade for the quarter.

PRACTICE REPORTS
I expect each student to practice at least 20 minutes a night, five days a week. Practice needs to be from their classroom book.  Every Friday a quiz on Canvas will need to be completed. The quiz asks specific questions involving your daily practice sessions. No points will be awarded for practice unless this quiz is completed every Friday.

GRADE BREAKDOWN
Grades will be determined by the following percentage of possible points per quarter.  The number of points possible each quarter will vary with the number of tests, assignments, performances & participation.

A+ = 97-100%        C+ = 77-79%
A = 94-96%          C   = 74-76%
A- = 90-93%          C- = 70-73%
B+ = 87-89%           D+ = 67-69%
B   = 84-86%          D   = 64-66%
B- =80-83%          D- = 60-63%
                                 F    = 59% and below

SCHOOL/CLASS TARDY POLICY
Students are allowed three tardies a quarter before it affects their citizenship grade.
4th Tardy – Citizenship dropped to “N”
5th Tardy – Citizenship dropped to “U”

CARE OF MUSIC
In addition to the Standard of Excellence Book, I will be loaning out sheet music that we will be preparing for concerts every quarter.  Students are expected to handle the music with care. I will be collecting the music back at the end of every concert. If music is lost, damaged or destroyed, a $4.00 replacement charge for each piece of music will be assessed to that student who is assigned to the music.

FILM (VIDEO) USE FOR INSTRUCTION
The Weber School District Board policy on video usage prohibits films (that don’t include public performance rights) to be shown for reasons other than instructional purposes under the “fair use” provision of the copyright law.  Films shown in junior high schools must be rated “G.”  A “PG” rated film may be shown with parent and building administrator approval.

All films shown in band classes will be used to augment instruction; be correlated to instructional objectives; include relevant activities in addition to viewing the film or film segments (discussion, worksheet, etc.).  Students will be accountable for actively viewing the film and any accompanying activities and assignments (i.e. worksheets, discussion, notes, etc.).

As stated above, “PG” rated films may only be shown in junior high with administrator and parent approval.  Please sign the accompanying permission slip if you are willing to allow your student to view a PG rated film at some time during the school year in band.

The use of videos during the band class period will be very limited and applied only when it will make a positive impact to achieve instructional objectives.  Any film chosen for viewing in class will be screened to avoid possible objectionable language or inappropriate scenes.

BUS TRAVEL-PERMISSION
A permission slip is included in this packet concerning travel occurring during the school day such as district band festivals and recruiting trips.  This is a “blanket” permission slip covering events listed on the band calendar included with this disclosure.  This “blanket” permission does not take away your right to contact the band teacher at any time to withdraw permission for a specific event.
