Gender Affirmation Project - Request Form
The Gender Affirmation Project is a collaboration between Trans-ilience: The Transgender Stress and Resilience Research Team, the MSU Triangle Bar Association, and the Allen Neighborhood Center. We provide logistical and/or financial support (while funding available) for transgender and nonbinary people looking to legally change their name and/or update their gender marker. 

The following questions will help us learn more about you and your needs, so that we can prepare in advance to assist you with these processes. If you have any questions about the program or the form, you can contact us at genderaffirmation@gmail.com. 

Currently, eligibility for the program is as follows: 
  • identify as trans or nonbinary in some way
  • ages 18 or up
  • live in Ingham, Eaton, or Clinton county
  • for those seeking financial assistance – self-reported financial need

The fees for a legal name change usually total around $300-350. We can help cover the cost of this, as long as we have financial means available through our fundraising efforts. We also recognize that some people may need more financial assistance than others. Thinking about your needs, what level of financial assistance do you anticipate needing?

If you are seeking help with a birth certificate change, please indicate the state in which the birth certificate was issued. Skip this question is not applicable for you.
Although we are knowledgeable about the processes for legally updating a name and/or gender marker, we do not have legal backgrounds and cannot provide legal advice. That said, we are seeking collaborations with others with legal backgrounds to help in situations where folks may need more specific legal guidance. Do you anticipate having a more in-depth need for legal advice?
