TOP Advisory Board Nominations and Applications

The Advisory Board for the Transparency and Openness Promotion (TOP) Guidelines and the Center for Open Science are seeking new members of the board with terms beginning in January 2025. Consistent with its bylaws, the advisory board reviews and helps to maintain TOP, suggesting extensions and revisions as needed.

The TOP Guidelines are a policy and practice framework that outlines behaviors researchers can perform to make the entire lifecycle of their research transparent and open. Published in Science in 2015, the Guidelines include eight modular standards, each with three levels of increasing stringency.

Board activities: Advisory board members will review drafts of proposed changes to the TOP Guidelines, ideate and elaborate needed changes to the TOP Guidelines, draft proposed changes to the TOP Guidelines, and vote to recommend changes to the TOP Guidelines.

Estimated time commitment: Members meet virtually on a twice annual basis for a 1.5-2 hour long meeting. They also provide input and interact over email and other virtual platforms throughout the year as needed. Terms begin in January and last for three years, with additional terms possible by mutual consent.

Qualifications for the position include knowledge of issues leading to calls for increased transparency and rigor in scientific practice, including publishing, funding, and hiring practices. Expert knowledge of some of the following areas is required: open data, code, and materials (including physical materials sharing in the life sciences); data citation practices; reporting guidelines, preregistration in basic or preclinical sciences; replication research; or Registered Reports. Experience in implementing policy in areas of publishing, funding, or hiring practices is desired. We seek representation from researchers in diverse research disciplines, varying career stages, different world regions, and demographic groups that are underrepresented in academic research.

This position is voluntary and does not offer a monetary stipend. Review of applications is rolling, but apply before May 31st, 2024 for best consideration. If you would like to nominate a colleague for the board, or have any questions about the board, please contact:
