CompositionLab: a new music workshop for composers
Attention all composers: the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra is thrilled to invite you to write a piece of original music for our Composition Workshop, led by composer-conductor Kenneth Young.

The pieces will be performed by CSO musicians in a workshop on Sunday 11th August, 2-5pm at the CSO Rehearsal rooms, 2/4 Klondyke Drive, Hornby South.

Submissions may be subjected to a selection process, and priority will be given to those composers who will be attending the workshop.

Composers can decide on the length of their work but, for longer works, we may play an excerpt of it with input from the composer and conductor. The works will be for a skeleton orchestra (5 or more instruments).

Orchestration: single instruments: 1/1/1/1/1 1111.1111 timp, perc, harp

Scores can be in PDF, MuseScore, or Sibelius file formats. Deadline for submissions is Monday 1st July, 5pm. No late submissions will be accepted.

If you like, you can include an MP3 file of your work in your submission.

For inspiration, we highly recommend attending the CSO’s Lamb & Hayward Masterworks concert, Spirit of Adventure, on Saturday 17th July, which features the world premiere of Gareth Farr’s Roar of A Thousand Tigers, a symphony commissioned by the Hillary Centenary Steering Committee to commemorate the centennial of the great mountaineer’s birth. If you submit a work, you will qualify for a discount on the concert tickets. Book here: https://www.eventfinda.co.nz/2019/lamb-hayward-masterworks-spirit-of-adventure/christchurch

Musescore is a free composing programme that can generate both PDF scores and MP3 files. Visit https://musescore.org/en to download.
