With the rise of video chats, I was hoping to put together a list of potential speakers/presenters that might be able to visit my classes virtually and discuss how they use GIS in a particular industry and any pertinent information about GIS careers. The time periods that would work for us best are between the hours of Noon and 2:00 PM EST until January 7th, 2022 and from that point it will be from 9:45 AM until 10:45 Am EST.
Our school is considered a program school and our 11th and 12th grade students focus on different clusters. I am hoping to get a wide variety of speakers from different fields so that we can connect GIS to as many of our clusters as possible. Even if you don't fit in any of the clusters below, I would still love to hear from you. My goal is to demonstrate the wide variety of fields intertwined with GIS.
The clusters are as follows:
Engineering
•
Aerospace Engineering
•
Environmental Engineering with Clean Energy
•
Innovations in STEM with Core Engineering
Health Science
•
Biomedical Science
•
Pre-Medicine
Information Technology
•
Computer Science - Programming
•
Global Logistics and Supply Chain Management
•
Informatics
•
Networking
•
Web and Digital Communication
Arts and Entertainment
•
Advanced Art
•
Entertainment Technology
Our administration puts a premium on having practicing professionals speak to our classes. i'd love to have a diverse group of individuals from all fields and walks of life demonstrate the power of GIS.
I am not a trained GIS professional, I taught Advanced Placement Human Geography for years and have only recently started working with GIS and trying to build this program at our high school. Currently we teach GIS 1 and have a small group of students signed up for GIS 2 next semester. In GIS 1 we have focused mainly and using ArcGIS Online and with GIS 2 we will branch out and use ArcGIS Pro. It has been really exciting as both the students and myself are learning. This semester we have had a few local speakers and some remote visitors including John Nelson from ESRI and this Friday, Dec. 3rd we have Dr. Fred Calaf from NASA scheduled to meet.
If any member of members of Women in GIS would be interested in joining us, please complete the form below and I will email you and we can set something up. Thank you so much for considering this and I hope my students can talk with some of you virtually!
Sincerely,
