Application for the Climate Leaders Fellowship

The Climate Leaders Fellowship is a free leadership development program for students (age 14-18) interested in climate change and environmental sustainability, and is provided by a collaboration between the Deliberative Democracy Lab at Stanford University, the Rustic Pathways Foundation and Rustic Pathways.

The next cycle of the Fellowship will take place from March 1 - April 30, 2023. The final deadline to apply is February 5, 11:59pm Pacific Time. Late submissions will be considered for the waitlist.

Accepted fellows will be invited into cohorts focused on implementing a volunteer project in their community. Which of the following cohorts would you be interested in joining? (Note: the more you select, the more likely you'll be accepted) *

Food/clothing/disaster readiness materials drive. Climate change is already causing extreme weather events (fires, floods, hurricanes, droughts, etc…) which disproportionately impact lower income individuals. To build awareness and support those in need, your cohort will collect resources to help the neediest in your community and then distribute them to local organizations who serve those populations.

Recycling or composting education to reduce waste. The more we consume, the more impact we have on the environment. While many people have a desire to reduce, reuse, and recycle, it can be hard to know or remember what to do. Your cohort will create a campaign / tutorial / class /etc… to provide compelling and memorable strategies to reduce consumption, properly recycle (according to the rules of your community), and/or explore composting.

Community garden and/or compost program. Consuming locally grown produce and reducing landfill waste are two lifestyle changes that can reduce environmental impact and serve as inspiration to do even more. For this project, you’ll get friends, family, and neighbors excited so that you can collect funds to start and maintain a shared garden and/or compost bin. Once your first harvest or compost is produced, share them back with your community.

Tree planting. Trees are nature’s way to capture carbon from the atmosphere to reduce the impact of greenhouse gasses. They also bring life and color to areas that might not be visually appealing. For this project, you will conduct research to identify where in your community you could plant and maintain one or more trees and which species would be most appropriate, get permission (if you need it) to plant them, gather funds or donations to acquire seeds or saplings, get help to plant them, and publicize / celebrate the new trees once they’re in the ground.

Accepted fellows will be expected to join live Zoom events (roughly 3 times per month) to meet and collaborate with other Fellows from across the world. Please indicate which times would be most convenient for you to attend (note the more slots you indicate availability for, the more likely we can accept and place you into a cohort).

PLEASE NOTE TIME ZONES: Several time zones are provided in each option, but you may need to convert the time to your local time zone.

*Note: Most students in Asia find Options 1 is most convenient, and most students in Europe/Africa find Option 2 the best for them.
