About Program
Sri Lanka is one of the highest biologically diverse countries in Asia and recognized as a “biodiversity hot spot” of global and national importance. Sri Lanka has a rich diversity of flora and fauna, owing to the varied climate, topography and soils, believed to be the highest in Asia in terms of unit land area. Much of the species are endemic, are distributed in a wide range of ecosystems which can be broadly categorized into forest, grassland, aquatic, coastal, marine and cultivated. The diversity of ecosystems in the country has resulted in a host of habitats, which contain high genetic diversity.

The expertise human resources in higher education institutions and in various other organizations in Sri Lanka are not properly utilized contrast to other countries to train the manpower for future generations especially in the fields of environmental sciences. Although, there is a big demand for such courses among the employees in different sectors and school leavers, deficiencies of such opportunities will be filled at a certain extent by the courses which will be panned.

The main objective of this distance learning program is to cater the emerging demand with the emerging importance in the fields of biodiversity, ecosystem management and environment.

Entry Requirement
For Advanced Certificate in Biodiversity and Ecosystem Management (CBEM)
• Those who have passed six subjects of GCE (OL) Examination or NVQF level III qualifications
• Credit pass for the Science is compulsory

For Diploma in Biodiversity and Ecosystem Management(DBEM)
• Passing three subjects in the GCE (AL) Examination* (preferably subjects of Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Agriculture, Subjects of Technology stream, Mathematics, Geography, Economics, Sociology) or
• The NVQF level IV or equivalent qualifications* or
• Passing the Advance Certificate level in Biodiversity and Ecosystem Management or
Any other equivalent qualifications or experience in the relevant field or professional qualifications that will be considered on a case by case basis, by the Distance and Continuing Education Unit (DCEU) the approval of the Senate of University of Ruhuna.
• Pass for English in the GCE (O/L) Examination

* Applicants from 1 & 2 categories need to pass the qualifying examination conducted by the Board of Study.

Medium - English and Sinhala

Mode of Teaching - Open Distance Learning

Duration - CBEM – 6 months, DBEM – 1 year

Course Fee is 20,000 LKR for Advanced Certificate in Biodiversity and Ecosystem Management and 30,000LKR for Diploma in Biodiversity and Ecosystem Management (all chargers are included except application processing fee) and payment can be made by 2 installments.
