We are interested in learning about your background. You are not expected to have previously participated in Model UN; in fact, many of our members are new to MUN when they join our organization. Rather, we are interested in learning about how your past experiences and the skills you have gained make UCBMUN of interest to you. We highly encourage you to limit your response to about 100-150 words.

What’s a problem, whether local or global, that deeply interests you? What do you think is the ideal solution to your chosen problem?

*
Limit 200 words. As you walk us through the problem you choose to talk about, remember to root your response in what about the problem interests you. Please share possible solutions that you believe in strongly and relevant stakeholders within your response.

Please choose one of the following scenarios and explain how you would gain influence for yourself in the scenario you selected, listing the steps you would take to accomplish the stated objective in a crisis. Please make your plan of action as detailed as possible and provide any context surrounding the steps you take.  Please choose ONLY ONE of the problems to solve, and write a quick letter to your secretary, giving steps on how you plan on solving this issue. We encourage you to bullet point or number your steps.

1. The economy is starting to falter due to the automobile industry not producing enough cars because of a labor strike. The labor strike, perhaps inconveniently, is being led by Minnie F, the daughter of Jim Farley, the CEO of Ford. You are currently the Secretary of Commerce for the United States, and your deputy Secretary is urging you to deal with this strike or find some other method for economic stability.

2. You are the leader of the Tecumseh Confederacy during the War of 1812. There is suspicion that the United States will soon launch a guerilla attack on your settlement in a vie for the land the confederacy rests on. There hasn’t been any form of conflict yet, but your allies in the United Kingdom and other neighboring tribes are encouraging some form of military preparation.

3. You are the leader of a major art heist group, supported by South African and Indian billionaires, aiming to steal back the Crown Jewels of the United Kingdom. Your goal is to steal the jewels back and deliver them safely to their rightful owners without getting caught, though the UK is anticipating your attack and has blocked sewage pipes in an attempt to restrict this from happening. How will you move forward, given you have 2 months to complete this heist?

If you are confused about how to organize your thoughts, we encourage you to refer to these example letters. Please note that the topics of these letters are different than the prompts assigned to you. https://tinyurl.com/ucbmunnotes
UCBMUN meets once a week on Mondays from 7-9 PM PST. Members must: (1) attend at least 6 meetings during a semester; (2) compete at an away conference or at BayMUN, a one-day conference held at UC Berkeley; and (3) staff our high school conference, BearMUN, from 11/11-11/12.

Would you be able to make these time commitments?
*
If you answered "no" to the question above, please elaborate on which time commitment(s) you are unable to make.
As new members, you are required to attend New Member Training (NMT) sessions every Thursday from 7-9 PM PST as an orientation to the club for this semester. Will you be able to make these sessions?
*
If you answered "no" to the question above, please share which times you are available, especially on Thursday evenings.
You will be notified if you have been selected for an interview by 10:00 am PST on Sunday, 1/28, at the latest. For those who move on to the next stage, we will be hosting a Meet & Greet on Monday, 1/29, from 8 pm to 10 pm PST. We want to emphasize that your attendance at Meet & Greet will not be used to evaluate you. It is simply a chance for you to get to know the members of our club.

Furthermore, we will be hosting a virtual interview workshop on Tuesday, 1/23, from 8:00 pm - 10:00 pm. During the workshop, we will be familiarizing you with the kinds of questions we ask as well as the structure of our interview. We highly encourage all applicants to make sure they are available for the workshop since past applicants have found it rather useful.

Lastly, please note that interviews will be conducted in-person on Tuesday, 1/30, and Wednesday, 1/31. If you are unavailable on both days, please reach out to Supriya Sharma at supriyasharma@berkeley.edu as soon as you submit your application and we will do our very best to accommodate you.

Thank you once again for your interest in UCBMUN!
