It is understood that a student might not receive their first choice of instrument, due to high demand and will be granted on a first come, first serve basis. (Miss Karbel will send home information in the coming weeks on which instrument the student has been assigned; please stay tuned).
Clear selection
It is understood that if a student is interested in percussion (drums/xylophone), that they must first participate on one of the other available instrument options until January.
Clear selection
It is understood that after Miss Karbel has let families know their student's instrument assignment, they agree to contact her if any assistance is needed in procuring an instrument.
(A welcome letter with a list of instrument rental shops will be given in the coming weeks, please stay tuned).
(Renting is recommended over buying because: 1.) rental shops will rent out reputable instrument brands, opposed to 'knock-off' brands, 2.) repairs may be covered/insured if the instrument breaks, 3.) it is easy to return the instrument if the student decides to drop out of band).

If I need help, or have a question or problem, I will contact Miss Karbel.
Fiona_Karbel@etiwanda.org, Rooms, or Google Classroom are all contact options.
It is also understood that if there is perceived problem with your instrument, you will check with me first to see if it is something I can fix, and if not, you agree to wait for me to give you a referral to a repair shop. (I have had students come without instruments saying their instrument is in the repair shop, only to hear it is something simple I could have fixed in class).
Clear selection
If a family decision has been made that a student would like to drop from the band program, I will contact Miss Karbel to let her know. (Student will then be removed from the roster and no band grade will appear on their report card). It is understood that a student may not re-enter the band program if the decision to drop has been made.

We will make sure that our student has a designated area for practicing their instrument at home. We will also make sure that our student has a designated time frame to commit 20-30 minutes of practice each day, around sports or other commitments.

I understand that a student will receive a 0% on a day they forget to bring their instrument to school. This will heavily impact their grade, typically lowering it one letter grade, and will not be able to be made up.
Please note that a student's absence from school will not impact their grade, however getting caught up will be necessary in order to stay on track.

It is understood that band is a graded course, in which letter grades A through F are given.

Grading Procedure:
*please note that Elementary Band does not have an Aeries account*

Student must attend each band class with instrument, music, pencil, and materials.
Each day of band, the student will be given a grade out of 5 points. The grades will be mathematically averaged together for a final grade at the end of each trimester.
A weekly progress report will not be sent home- this being said, students and parents are free to ask me their current cumulative grade at any time, and I will be happy to provide it.
~5 points (A): student came prepared with materials, and played their playing assignment with the correct fingerings in the correct rhythm.
~4 points (B): student played their playing assignment mostly correct, but missed some fingerings and/or rhythms.
~3 points (C): student only played a few of the correct notes and rhythms, and the song is not recognizable to the ear
~2 points (D): student is unable to produce any correct notes or rhythms, indicating a lack of practice, but maintained a good attitude to at least attempt and try
~1 point (F): student attended class, but sat and did not participate at all
~0 points (F): student forgot to bring their instrument

Please understand that band is a pull out class, meaning students will leave their homeroom classroom for 30 minutes one time per week to come to band. (Student's assigned day/time will be sent out in the coming weeks, please stay tuned).
This being said, student agrees to keep up with school assignments for their homeroom teacher and make up any classwork they missed while at band.
Clear selection
It is understood and agreed upon that a student may be released from the band program if they forget their instrument 3 times, and/or have been sent back to class 3 times for disruptive behavior.

***VERY IMPORTANT*** Please be sure that the incoming band student joins my Google Classroom at the link below. Important dates, documents and music will be uploaded here throughout the school year, and it is the best way for students to communicate with me and ask for extra help. PLEASE do this before hitting the submit button below so it is not forgotten about.

Thank you, and I am looking very forward to having your child in band! We are going to have a great year, and will put on one concert in the spring. :)
