CARE to Stop Violence Peer Program Application
Thank you for your interest in becoming a part of the CARE to Stop Violence Team during the 2020-2021 school year!

PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING CAREFULLY BEFORE APPLYING!

CARE PEER PROGRAMS - OVERVIEW
Campus Advocates Respond and Educate (CARE) to Stop Violence offers 3 Peer Programs that current undergraduate students can take part in. Current undergraduate students may apply to CARE Peer Education or CARE Peer Outreach during the 2019-2020 school year (applications close March 2nd, 2020). Applications accepted during the 2019-2020 school year are for admission to the program during the 2020-2021 school year. If you have a preference for a program, please indicate your preference in the space provided.

PLEASE NOTE that CARE Advocacy accepts applicants during the month of February. If you are interested in applying for CARE Advocacy, check back in February for that option on this form.

We reach out to individuals who have applied to a program at the beginning of the following month. (Ex: If you apply in October, we will contact you in early November for an interview.)

Offers to join a Peer Program will be made to selected applicants after interviews are completed. All Peer Program participants are required to attend a 40-hour training the week before classes start in the Fall semester (9 AM-5 PM, August 24-28, 2020). Only students who complete this process are eligible to enroll in PEER31X courses. Students are expected to commit to serve during both the Fall and Spring semesters of the 2020-2021 school year. Students earn three credits per semester in each course.

CARE PEER EDUCATION (RECRUITMENT IS OPEN ALL YEAR - PLEASE APPLY!)
With the University Health Center's Peer Education Program undergraduate students earn credit to
educate the campus community about wellness through one of four topic-specific lenses
(substance use, sexual health, mental health, or power-based violence). CARE Peer Educators
serve under the Prevention Education Coordinator and specialize in power-based violence
prevention. Peers have opportunities to turn their innovative ideas into action. Being a peer
educator is a great opportunity to get hands-on experience working directly with students,
improve your public speaking and program planning skills, and join a group of talented, creative,
dedicated students like you who are committed to our mission of wellness for all at UMD. Peer
Educators should expect to commit to an average of 3-5 hours each week (including class time).
The Peer Education class is scheduled on Mondays from 4-5 PM and Wednesdays from 4-5 PM
(select Wednesday classes are 4-6 PM) in the Fall and Spring semesters.

   What do Peer Educators do?
   1. Present and facilitate workshops about power-based violence and bystander intervention to the
       campus community.
   2. Create and execute interactive educational tabling, pop-up and campus-wide events.
   3. Research and examine education in various public health models and populations.
   4. Learn about different levels of prevention and response and collaborate with other CARE Peer
       Groups.

CARE PEER OUTREACH (RECRUITMENT IS OPEN ALL YEAR - PLEASE APPLY!)
University Health Center Outreach Peers serve under the direction of the Outreach Coordinator
at the CARE to Stop Violence office. Outreach Peers are the voice of the CARE office and are
ultimately responsible for ensuring the entire UMD campus community is aware of CARE and
other resources for those that have been impacted by sexual assault, relationship violence,
stalking, or sexual harassment (power-based violence). Outreach Peers should expect to
commit to an average of 3-5 hours each week (this includes class time, which is 2 hours per
week). Classes are scheduled on Mondays and Wednesdays from 4-5 PM in the Fall and Spring
   semesters.

   What do Outreach Peers do?
   1. Educate the campus community about the advocacy, therapy, and education resources and
       services provided by CARE.
   2. Plan and execute large-scale events, create promotional materials, table to promote CARE,
and facilitate presentations to student groups.
   3. Build relationships with student groups and campus organizations, conduct focus groups
with students, and  employ other research/assessment methods to improve CARE outreach
       and services.
   4. Examine policies and current events related to power-based violence in order to effectively
       respond to changing community needs.

CARE PEER ADVOCACY (RECRUITMENT IS OPEN IN FEBRUARY - PLEASE CHECK BACK TO APPLY THEN!)
University Health Center Peer Advocates serve under the direction of the Lead Advocate at the
CARE to Stop Violence office. Peer Advocates work with clients of the CARE to Stop Violence
office, which include primary and secondary victims/survivors of sexual assault, relationship
violence, stalking, and sexual harassment (power-based violence). Peer Advocates should
expect to sign up for 12 office hours each week, with each shift being no less than 3 hours. The
Peer Advocacy class takes place on Wednesdays from 4:30-6:00 PM in the Fall and Spring
   semesters.

What do Peer Advocates do?
   1. Support clients by providing resources, crisis intervention and emotional support both in
person and after hours via the CARE crisis cell.
   2. Arrange and possibly accompany clients to the hospital to receive a Sexual Assault Forensic
Exam (SAFE) or arrange University Health Center medical appointments.
   3. Accompany clients to meetings with the Office of Civil Rights and Sexual Misconduct
(Title IX), the Police, the Office  of Student Conduct, and other on-/off-campus reporting
       resources.
   4. Plan and execute a “Take Back the Night” event and participate in other campus events as
       requested.
