2024 Summer Swahili Camp Volunteer Application

Jambo! Hello!

Thank you for your interest in volunteering with Marafiki Center's Summer Swahili Camp.

Our annual Summer Swahili Camp is for kids from African backgrounds to stay connected to their culture and language. We provide Swahili lessons for four age groups (6-8 years, 9-11 years, 12-14 years, 15-17 years). We will go on exciting field trips across Kentucky, teach kids to swim, and have a blast celebrating our African cultural values and traditions.

Volunteers are critical to the success of this program and support in a variety of ways. 

Please provide your information to apply to volunteer. Once approved, we will be in touch to confirm your assignments and schedule. We will host a Volunteer Orientation prior to the start of camp as well.

Swahili Camp Schedule:
Location: Winburn Middle School
1060 Winburn Dr, Lexington, KY 40511

Volunteer Orientation Dates (must attend only one): 
1. Friday, June 7, 5:30-6:30 pm (In-Person)
2. Monday, June 10, 5:30-6:30 pm (Online)

Swahili Camp Dates: June 17 - July 12 
(No Camp on: Thursday, July 4 & Friday, July 5)

Days & Times: Monday - Friday from 9 am - 4 pm 
(Camp kids arrive at 10 am and leave by 3 pm)

A typical day volunteering at Swahili Camp involves:
  • Setting up the classrooms in the morning with materials and prepping activities.
  • Setting up food and serving breakfast and lunch.
  • Guide kids from one activity to the next during the day.
  • Ensure children are safe and following the code of conduct during camp.
  • Getting kids loaded up on the right bus routes home.
  • Exploring new places around Kentucky on fun, Friday Field Trips.
  • Helping kids learn to swim on Wednesdays.
  • Making friends with the Camp Kids and of course, having tons of FUN.
  • Learn and practice some Swahili while you're at it!
