Mentor Interest Form
The 2022 Rice Health Policy Hackathon, sponsored by the Rice Social Policy Analysis Department, is seeking mentors for the weekend of August 5-7. This 36-hour policy challenge aims to bring Texas undergraduate students together to design policy that tackles the city’s most pressing health equity issues, which have been outlined by Harris Health, one of our main partners. This year's topics will explore issues in prison healthcare, food insecurity, optimizing virtual care, ED overutilization, and hospital discharge/intersystem transfers. Each winning team will receive a $5,000 stipend and the opportunity to intern at Harris Health on population health initiatives. If you have expertise in social determinants of health, public health, clinical medicine, or public policy, we would love for you to join our mentor team.

The mentor role involves:
-Time: 1 hour minimum commitment during the weekend of August 6-7—you choose the hour(s) that you will be virtually available
-What you’ll be doing: advising student groups in 30-minute Zoom sessions; you will be matched with student groups based on your areas of expertise
-Knowledge base: some basic knowledge of Harris Health’s patient population, the main policy topics, and health disparities

If you are interested in participating as a mentor, please email the organizers at hackhealth@rice.org.

Relevant Title(s), Current or Previous *
Tell us a little bit about yourself (interests, background, etc) *
Which of the following topics can you speak to (through the lens of health disparities)? *
Required
Would you be able to make a 15-minute pre-recorded workshop expanding on any of our themes? *
The workshop would require you to define the issue, explain how it is related to health disparities, what Harris Health is doing to address this issue, and any holes in these current programs. These recordings will be disseminated to students, so they can have better context as to what parts of the issue need to be addressed in their policies.
Required
Would you like to set up a Zoom meeting or phone call with an organizer to learn more about this role, or is email correspondence enough? *
Depending on your answer to the second question, an organizer will either contact you to set up a Zoom or phone call to discuss more in depth about mentorship or they will reach out to you and send a more detailed overview of your role. Regardless of your choice, we will continue to send updates about your role and the hackathon as we near the event.
