Online data collection has become an indispensable research tool in social sciences. This talk provides an overview of the current state of online data collection, focusing on Hong Kong. Online data collection can be applied not only to simple surveys and experiments, but also to more complex designs such as conjoint experiments, news site browsing experiments, and implicit association tests. On the other hand, the problems inherent in online data collection should be fully considered before use. These issues include inadvertent responses, coverage bias, and various levels of (self-)censorship. Online data collection in Hong Kong faces many challenges, but more creative uses need to be devised.

Speaker bio: Tetsuro Kobayashi is an Associate Professor at
the Department of Media and Communication, City University of Hong Kong. His
research revolves around political communication, political psychology, and
public opinion in East Asia. His recent work has been published in journals
such as Communication Research, New Media & Society, and Journal of
Cross-Cultural Psychology.
