PCAF Stories open call
Perth Comic Arts Festival is looking for local comic book creators to submit their finished stories for potential featuring in our live reading events!

We accept submissions on an ongoing basis. We currently plan to do one family-friendly Stories event on the morning of 14 April 2024, and another for adults later in the year.

If you'd like your work considered for the 14 April event, submit it by 23 February. But even if those dates have passed, please also continue to submit your work after that for future events : )

What is PCAF Stories?
PCAF Stories are free-to-attend events that combine sequential art with performance, where art from comic books is displayed on a screen as the creator(s) reads it aloud and guides the audience through the story. These live readings are inspired by the Read to Me events based in Melbourne.

In 2023, Perth Comic Arts Festival organised four of these events. Two for children on Sunday mornings during school holidays, and two for adults on Thursday evenings. These events are generously hosted by the State Library of Western Australia in the Perth Cultural Centre in their 200-seat Theatre. (It is close to public transport and wheelchair accessible; we will continue to explore other accessibility measures as we obtain more funding and support.)

We hope to continue running these events in the future, funding pending!
What is PCAF Stories looking for?
For our first few Stories events, the committee pulled from our personal networks to find volunteer presenters. Now that we've successfully done a few of these and secured a modest budget, we want to make sure Stories reads represent the Boorloo/Perth and greater Western Australian comics communities in a broader way!

In order to do that, we need people who may be interested in presenting to share their work with us. We're looking for stories that hit these notes:
  • It must be a comic! We welcome experimental pieces and various formats (both excerpts from longer works and collections of short works like strips, styles including manga and vertical scroll are welcome), but at the least it should feature a narrative told through sequential art
  • Created at least in part by Western Australian residents, where at least one creator can be physically present for the Perth-based Stories event (for example, maybe you're an artist working with a writer who lives elsewhere)
  • It doesn't have to be new material for this event! You may submit work from your archives if you think it's worth sharing
  • Approximately 3 to 15 minutes in live reading length (if you're not sure, feel free to submit it anyway; you can always time yourself reading it out at home, too)
  • Both family-friendly and adult-oriented works welcome, but some mature content may be limited depending on a few factors such as venue restrictions
  • Visiting creators from elsewhere who have plans to be in Perth may submit work for consideration, subject to schedule/logistics
  • If you're shy, it's absolutely okay to ask a theatrical friend to help with the speaking part of your reading (we might even be able to help arrange for vocal support for sound effects, character voices, etc), but we do need the original creator to be physically present at the event
  • If invited, you will be asked to reformat the work into slides that work well with the live reading performance format (we have examples, it's pretty straightforward –– most display a page or spread and reveal the panels one by one, or break panels up into separate slides for different pacing)
  • Please only submit each work once, but we'd love it if you return to this open call to send in more comics as you finish them in the future! If you have multiple works ready, you can submit them all at once
  • And please only submit your own work.
We store all responses/submissions in a shared Google Drive accessible only to PCAF committee members, to be used only for planning Stories events. The PCAF committee will never use or redistribute your work without contacting you directly for permission first.

Our selection process is still being established, but we typically aim to assemble a complementary mix of comics to a theme for each event.

PCAF is a volunteer-run not-for-profit organisation whose programming relies on grants, sponsors, etc. That said, treating our local comics community professionally is important to us. Funding pending, we aim to pay a $100 honorarium per presented work at Stories events. We will confirm this fee if/when you are invited to participate.

We are not looking for remote/video presenters at this time. Please only submit if you can be physically present at these events.

If you're kind of interested but you've never done one of these before, don't sweat it! Neither had we when we got started. Our team is happy to coach and support you through the process.

Your social media, portfolio, and any other relevant links *
Tell us a little about yourself –– do you live in the Perth metropolitan area? If not, where are you usually based and when/how often do you come to Perth? *
What kind of comics do you make? (Just a sentence or two is fine, we're just curious how you'd pitch your work to an audience!)

Submission instructions
Please send us the full, complete comic. We cannot consider unfinished or partial works, even if you intend to read only an excerpt. The exception to this is a full chapter/issue/episode from an ongoing series/project.

Please submit your comics through one of these means:
  • Cloud service link (Dropbox, Google Drive, One Drive, or similar trusted service, as long as permissions allow us to view without making an account or requesting access) to a web-sized PDF (<100MB)
  • OR permalink to a public webpage where we can read it (webcomic or porfolio website, Tumblr, Instagram if it fits in one post, etc; anywhere that doesn't require signing into an account or paying for access)
Note that if a supplied link breaks or we otherwise are unable to view your work, we may not be able to include it for Stories consideration. If you change hosts for your submitted webcomic, for example, please update your response to fix the link (everyone who fills out this form should receive an email that allows you to update your submission later).
Your comic links (if not clearly displayed please also tell us the title of the comic, names of all creators, and any other information you think would be useful)

Final notes
Any submissions that don't meet the requirements (for example, if you aren't in WA and don't plan on visiting) will be deleted.

Please note that we are a very busy volunteer team, so we won't be able to respond to every submission. We will keep your responses on file for consideration for future Stories events, and will get in touch if/when we can invite you to participate. Not hearing from us is never a judgment against the quality of your comics –– we just have very limited space and manpower!

If you ever want to remove your comic from consideration, just edit your response or email us to let us know. But again, we'll never use your work without contacting you first.

Thank you so much for sharing your comics with us, we're really excited to read them!!!

Drop a line to sarah@pcaf.org.au if you have any questions.
A copy of your responses will be emailed to the address you provided.
