Prevent Blindness, in partnership with the Prevention of Blindness Society of Metropolitan Washington, DC, is hosting a Vision Screening and Educational Event and Congressional briefing in recognition of World Sight Day 2024 and its call to action around children's vision and eye health. 

Both events are free to attend and open to the general public, and we ask interested persons to register to attend either or both events.

Vision Screening and Educational Event
Starting at 9:00am until 3:00pm, attendees will be able to participate in a vision screening provided by the Prevention of Blindness Society of Metropolitan Washington, DC. The screenings will determine both the individual's visual acuity and detect for glaucoma. The vision screening is free, and will provide individuals with information on their vision and eye health with appropriate referrals to eye care if needed. 

The State of Children's Vision and Eye Health: Congressional Briefing 
In addition,  from 11:30am - 1:00pm, Prevent Blindness will host a Congressional lunch briefing that will feature the following experts on children's vision and eye health:
  • Rep. Marc Veasey, Member of Congress (D-TX-33) - invited
  • Rep. Gus Bilirakis, Member of Congress (R-FL-12) - invited
  • David B. Rein, PhD, MPA, NORC at the University of Chicago 
  • Stacy Ayn Lyons, OD, FAAO, Professor and Chair, Specialty Care and Vision Sciences, New England College of Optometry; Chair of the National Center for Children's Vision and Eye Health Advisory Committee
  • Megan Collins, MD, MPH, Allen and Claire Jensen Professor of Ophthalmology, Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology, Wilmer Eye Institute, Johns Hopkins School of Medicine; Berman Institute of Bioethics, Johns Hopkins University, Department of Health Policy and Management, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health; and Vice Chair of the National Center for Children's Vision and Eye Health Advisory Committee
  • John D. Omura, MD, MPH, Medical Officer, Vision Health Initiative, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
  • Jenny Goddard, Parent Advocate and Prevent Blindness ASPECT Program Participant
