GradAMP 2023 - Mentor Application
This is the registration form to sign up as a mentor for the Graduate Application Mentorship Program (GradAMP).
First and foremost, thank you for your willingness to help new graduate school applicants follow in your footsteps. GradAMP would not exist if not for your help, and I am very grateful that you're willing to dedicate the little free time that you have to this.
GradAMP pairs together students applying to graduate school (mentees) with a PhD student mentor in their research field in order to help them through the application process. The graduate application process can be very alienating and daunting, particularly for underrepresented, low-income, first generation, or international students, who are less likely to have the same social resources as someone more familiar with the application process. GradAMP was started in hopes of bridging that divide in order to help make higher education more accessible to any and all students.
As a mentor, you will be assigned 1 or 2 undergraduate students who are actively applying for PhD programs during the 2023-2024 application season. We aim for a 1:1 ratio but in odd cases a 1:2 ratio might occur. Ideally, they will be applying to research programs in your research field.
There are not any strict guidelines on how you should structure your mentorship; I leave that for you to decide. Your overall goal will be to help your mentee(s) make good decisions about the application process (e.g., advice on how to structure a statement of purpose, deciding which groups to apply to, what school / PhD offer / research field is best for them) as well as help with the application process itself (e.g., editing essays, fellowship applications, mock interviews, resume reviews). Sometimes, students just need a sounding board to bounce ideas off of or a mentor to help set deadlines and keep them on schedule.
More information will be sent out after registration is closed.
Thank you again for participating in GradAMP. If you have any questions or are interested in being further involved with the logistics of the program, please email Betty Ramirez at b1ramirez@ucsd.edu
