Please use this form to book in-person school workshops with the Manitoba Council for International Cooperation (MCIC).

MCIC has a suggested donation of $50 per workshop to help cover staffing, materials and transportation costs. However, we want our workshops to be accessible, so the fee is not mandatory if schools are experiencing a lack of funds. Invoices will be provided upon confirmation of your workshop booking, and cheques can be made out to the Manitoba Council for International Cooperation.

Workshop themes/activities available: (Please note most workshops require 60-90 mins; grade recommendations are suggested for some, but can often be adjusted.) *

Access to Water (Gr. 5-9, 60-90 mins) - This workshop focuses on access to clean and safe drinking water around the world. Through an introduction of Global Goal #6, students will learn about the lack of access to clean and safe drinking water around the world and participate in an activity that demonstrates the inequality of access rights.

Building Blocks for a Good Life (Poverty) (Gr 5+) - Students order a list of items from most important to least important for a good life. Opens a discussion about poverty and what it means to have a good quality of life.

Child Labour (Gr 5+) - In this activity, students are introduced to the idea of child labour by first recording their own schedule on a 24-hour clock diagram, then comparing it to the day of a child labourer. Participants then work through several other profiles of children working and decide whether it’s “good” or “bad” work by placing the profile on a spectrum and sharing their reasoning.

Climate Justice (Gr. 7+, 75-90 mins) - An interactive activity including themes on droughts, storms, rising sea levels and how climate change affects the world. Students work in groups to build communities which experience the consequences of climate change, while developing mitigation and adaption strategies to survive. Students are in 4-6 groups, depending on class size; students need to be able to move around to talk to other groups.

Fair Trade - Trading Game (Gr. 7+, 75-90 mins) - This lesson discusses the importance of ethical consumption and introduces students to the basics of fair trade practices. The activity is a trading game where students are separated into countries who have an unequal amount of supplies, who then trade with each other, discovering the importance of fair trade and the impact of competitive consumerism. Students work in at least 4 groups at tables/desks (depending on class size) and will need room to move around and talk to each other.

Food Security/Hunger (Gr. 5-8, 45-60 mins) - In this workshop, students learn about food security and the impacts of hunger. Addressing natural and human influenced scenarios in which adequate food is not accessible or limited, the workshop allows students to understand how hunger and food security affect others around the world and in their own communities. A board game teaches students about the positive and negative realities of our global food system through the experience of a small, Global South farmer.

Global Poverty (Gr. 5+, 45-60 mins) - Students travel in groups through 4 stations, making decisions about health and the environment inside scenarios from around the world, choosing how to spend their resources to survive. Opens a conversation about inequality and global poverty.

Interconnected: Life on Land (Gr. 5-8, 60-90 mins) - In this board game modelled on SDG 15, students learn about the importance of Earth's ecosystems, resources, and our duty to protect it. Throughout the game, students are given the opportunity to make decisions that impact the land, its species, and humanity’s future needs with their given resources. The lesson focuses on biodiversity, animal extinction, forest management and freshwater ecosystems. Students will participate in groups (max 8 per group) at tables/desks.

Landmines (Gr. 7-10, 60-90 mins) - In this workshop, students will learn about the history of landmines and their use around the world. Starting with an overview of different types of landmines, their intended purposes and the consequences of their use, students will discuss how these weapons have permanently altered places around the world and the solutions that are being used to destroy them. In groups, students will design their ideal community (on paper) and then witness the impact landmines may have. A physical exercise is also used to demonstrate and lead discussion on what may be restricted when living in an area affected by live mines (collecting water, going to school, etc.).

Refugees & Migration - Forced to Flee (Gr. 7+, 60-90 mins) In this forced migration simulation, students work together in “family unit” groups, making difficult decisions to maintain their supply of food, money, and health while securing their future post-conflict. This activity helps transform thinking and inspire action around conflict, migration, and refugees. Students need 4 stations (table or desk) spread out around the room and will move in groups through the activity.

Sustainability & Global Citizenship (Gr. 7+, 60-90 mins) - In this workshop, students will explore the topics of sustainability and global citizenship through an introduction of the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals. During the session, smaller group exercises help demonstrate the interconnected nature of our world. Then, students will start planning their own sustainable take action projects, focused on a tangible goal.

Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) - An overview of the SDGs and an introduction to taking action to achieve the SDGs by 2030.

Solutions: Sustainable Communities (Gr. 6+, 60+ mins) - Students are given problems and work as a group brainstorming solutions using a "design-thinking" style worksheet, then use a box of creative supplies to create a model to demonstrate what their solution to the problem would look like. This activity is based on SDG 11.
