English 9 Disclosure 2019-2020
SAND RIDGE JUNIOR HIGH ENGLISH CLASS POLICIES
Graviet 9th Grade 2019-2020

Supplies:
1. You will need a folder/binder, so you have a place to keep handouts, paper, assignments, etc.
Please have this no later than 8/26.
2. You will need any required books as well as a personal choice reading book.
Please have your free reading book by 9/4.
3. You will always need something to write with.
4. You will need your student ID (in order to check out books from the school library).

Required books and student ID:
We will always be reading something. All books will be available in the school library. This is why it is necessary to have your student ID (so you can check out books). You may also buy books or use another library if you prefer. Every single day you will need your own reading book. This should be a book of your own choosing and/or a specific one that is required for class. This needs to be a real book or an e-reader. For safety reasons, students will not be allowed to read on their phones.

English Classroom Rules:
1. Be prepared with notebook, pencil, and books daily.
2. No food, candy, drinks, backpacks, toys, phones,or headphones in class.
3. Treat everyone with respect.
4. Do not cheat or aid someone else in cheating.
5. Hand in work on time.
6. Be in your seat by the time the tardy bell rings.
7. Follow all directions found in school rules.

Note: Students who repeatedly abuse classroom rules and bring distracting electronics (and other objects) may have them removed as per school policy. Not obeying classroom rules will result in a drop in a student’s citizenship grade.

Grading Scale:

Citizenship:
The Sand Ridge English Department insists that students obey school and classroom rules to maintain satisfactory citizenship.  Failure to do so will result in a drop in citizenship.  Also, the following guidelines will be used to decide citizenship: 1) Four tardies=N, Five tardies=U. Check portal regularly. 2) Any student repeatedly causing classroom disruptions, breaking class or school rules, or bringing phones or earbuds to class will receive a drop in citizenship. 3) Students who are cheating (copying work, plagiarizing work, or aiding others in cheating) will receive a U in citizenship and an F on the assignment.

Videos:
At times, throughout the school year, clips, segments, or full videos will be shown to enhance students’ learning and motivation.  Videos such as The Odyssey, Driving Miss Daisy, The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, and Romeo and Juliet will be shown to enhance comprehension of a text.  Other videos, including episodes of The Twilight Zone series may be shown to help teach classic plot development or practice core skills.  If you have any questions regarding videos, contact me personally.  I will include any video showings in my weekly emails.

Attendance:
There is a close relationship between attendance and success in school. DO NOT EXPECT GOOD GRADES IF ATTENDANCE IS POOR. Many activities such as group projects, interaction with other students, discussions, instructions, and videos are difficult, if not impossible, to make up. When an absence occurs, it is the responsibility of the student to collect all missed assignments and hand them in. I will send weekly emails to students and parents/guardians, so that you both can know what is happening each day in class.

Hall Passes:
Students who consistently use hall passes to leave class miss important information and essential work time. Hall passes will be limited. If your student has a medical issue and needs to leave the classroom, please contact the counseling office for a medical pass. You will receive one hall pass coupon per term. Hall passes may be saved and used from one term to the next. They, however, cannot be used for extra credit.

Late Work:
Late work will not be accepted (unless it’s because of an absence, illness, or other extenuating circumstances). However, due dates will include a date range, so students will have time to get work completed and handed in. There will, in addition, be enough points through extra credit to recover any missed points. When I have a sub, classes that are good will be able to earn coupons for handing in late work. Three late-work coupons will equal one free assignment. The cut-off date for any late work, absent work, or extra credit work will be the ninth week of the term. The tenth week of each term is reserved for grading and recording grades.

Core Curriculum:
The state of Utah’s core curriculum can be found here: http://www.uen.org/core/core.do?courseNum=4290.

Chromebooks and Textbooks:
Each student will be assigned a Chromebook and textbook to use in class. (Textbooks are also available online.) Students who purposely damage Chromebooks or textbooks will be responsible for the costs. Those who misuse Chromebooks (e. g. accessing inappropriate websites) will lose Chromebook privileges. The online textbook can be found here: www.wsd.net/hmh.

Phones/Earbuds/Smart Watches:
Since Chromebooks are accessible in class, there is no need for students to use phones, earbuds, smart watches, etc. Students will be asked to leave devices in lockers or--if they choose to bring them to class--will be asked to place them in a basket during class.

Contact Information and Resources:
Success depends so much on the interrelated working of parents, students, teachers, and administration.  Parents and students, please email, call, or access Google Classroom any time you have a concern or question. All handouts, information, and instructions will be available through Google Classroom this year.
