Checkers and Chess increase memory, focus, problem solving and spatial skills. Strategic board games also teach the consequences of choices, how to win and lose gracefully, how to plan and think ahead. We will begin with Checkers then move to basic Chess.
Who 

16 students, grades 2nd-4th, chosen by lottery from flyers received by 03/16/23. All skill levels should apply. This will be taught in Spanish and English.
When & Where 

Every Friday (and two Thursdays) from March 31 to May 19 in the library. (8 weeks total: March 31, April 6 (not 7), 14, 21, 27 (not 28) May 5, 12, 19.) Students go to the cafeteria right after school (without leaving the building) for a roll call and snack. Then they go with Mr. Octavio to the library for club from 4:00-5:00.
Instructor

Mr. Octavio Quezada is Foster’s Spanish Reading interventionist and has played Chess and Checkers his entire life. He was introduced at a very early age in Mexico and would love to inspire Foster’s future Chess Masters.
Fee 

$35 per student, $25 scholarship for those who qualify or have an Extended Day Program conflict. Fees can be paid at Foster School or on-line through infinite Campus. Pay before April 17th. A limited number of partial scholarships may be awarded based on free/reduced lunch eligibility.

Las damas y el ajedrez aumentan la memoria, el enfoque, la resolución de problemas y las habilidades espaciales. Los juegos de mesa estratégicos también enseñan las consecuencias de las elecciones, cómo ganar y perder con gracia, cómo planificar y pensar en el futuro. Comenzaremos con Damas y luego pasaremos al Ajedrez básico.

Cuándo y dónde 

Cada viernes (y dos jueves) del 31 de marzo al 19 de mayo en la biblioteca. (8 semanas en total: 31 de marzo, 6 (no7), 14, 21, 27 de abril (no 28) y 5, 12, 19 de mayo). Los estudiantes van a la cafetería inmediatamente después de la escuela (sin salir del edificio) para pasar lista y un refrigerio. Luego van con el Sr. Octavio a la biblioteca para el club de 4:00 a 5:00.
Instructor 

El Sr. Octavio Quezada es el intervencionista de lectura en español de Foster y ha jugado ajedrez y damas toda su vida. Le fué presentado a una edad muy temprana en México y le encantaría inspirar a los futuros maestros de ajedrez de Foster.
Cuota 

$35 dólares por estudiante. $25 dólares para aquellos que han calificado o tienen algún conflicto con el Programa de día de horario extendido Las cuotas pueden ser pagadas en las oficinas de la escuela Foster o en línea por medio de Infinite Campus. Paga antes del 17 de abril. Contamos con un número. limitado de becas parciales que pueden ser otorgadas en base al criterio de almuerzo gratis o reducido.
