2023 Science Olympiad at Virginia Tech Invitational: Volunteer Sign-Ups
Thank you so much for your interest in supporting Science Olympiad at Virginia Tech (SO@VT)!
We're hosting a Division B Satellite Tournament on January 21st, 2023, focused on providing an accessible, well-run tournament experience for younger Science Olympiad competitors, in Virginia and beyond.

We need volunteers to serve in the following capacities:
  • Test Graders (Least commitment, no experience necessary): Join us virtually on January 21st to read and score student responses on tests. A great way to support student competitors, no experience required; 2-3 hours (more if desired) commitment, including 1 hour of training.

  • Test Writers (Greatest commitment, experience desired): Write a test for middle/elementary school competitors in a subject of your choosing!
For our tournament, we want you to focus on making a well-written but "fun" test; include content you would have wanted to learn as an elementary or middle schooler, and ensure all teams (no matter their preparation) can answer various questions while only some teams can answer the toughest. Bad science puns and interesting problem scenarios encouraged.
The deadline for tests is January 5th.
We will provide feedback by January 10th. We request that you make revisions to meet our feedback by January 17th. You will need to upload your tests into the Scilympiad virtual platform by January 19th. Instructions on how to upload tests will be sent out shortly after January 5th. Some experience in the subject or related subjects is required, and previous Science Olympiad experience is ideal. You are welcome but not required to Event Supervise for your own test.
  • Event Supervisors (Experience desired): Monitor teams while they take tests through the Scilympiad test-taking platform, and answer team questions and concerns as they arise through a chat box. ("Hi ES, is this question supposed to say...", "Hi ES, am I allowed to...") Event Supervisors will also stay 1-2 hours after testing is complete to facilitate grading; we usually have groups of graders for each event so grading finishes quickly!
Some experience in the subject or related subjects is desired; previous Science Olympiad/Scilympiad experience is ideal. 4-5 hours of commitment, including training.
Please sign up by November 1st. We hope you'll join our volunteer community and connect with us soon! :)
